A+

Just wish those chicks in the front would shut the hell up and listen.

It's impossible for a capella groupie chicks to shut up and listen. They are a pestilence on college campuses everywhere.

The FPP is so poorly recorded that it's not really even worth a look but SirOmega's link is excellent!

I love my Daft Punk, but that Bitches Ain't Shit video blew it away. Awesome. If only for the better sound quality.

Plus, the guy on the end is wearing a Domo Kun hoodie. Sweeeet.

The domo hoodie was a nice retro touch.

4 a cappella versions of the "Such Great Heights". youtube contains multitudes.

Good Lord - the BAS vid is trés awesome. The a cappella version of the Zelda theme will always rock my dork heart in some all-conquering way, however.

If you'll forgive an abrupt change of genre, Tchaikovskiy's "1812 Overture", a cappella (except for the arty in the final measures, perforce).

Eh, I could do better in one take, with no rehearses. The singer's voice is not robotic enough. I used to try to get the a capella groups at Cornell to do some non-traditional material, like Tool's Prison Sex, Jimi's Star-Spangled Banner, NWA's Fuck the Police, NIN's Closer. I had no takers. We could have revolutionized things. I mean, Christ, how many times can you listen to "Fields of Gold" or that stupid "Enormous Penis" song?

A buddy of mine has done a couple of Interesting one-man A capella songs. Especially interesting if you're at all familiar with the music from Super Mario World.

Fun Fact: Everything except the vocoder in that song is a sample of Edwin Birdsong's "Cola Bottle Baby" sped up.

I'm torn between putting The Fat Boys on my iTunes to try to figure out what the difference between a capella and beat box is or trying to find the "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" theme just so I have an excuse to say, "Kick it Rockapella!".

If it wasn't for those pesky copyright laws, I'd share the greatest a cappella piece I've ever set ears upon, and that is a vocal arrangement of Barber's Adagio for Strings set to the Agnus Dei lyrics. amazon link - see track 4.

The "Bitches Ain't Shit" group covered Ben Folds rendition itunes.
posted by jeversol at 10:23 AM on February 14, 2007

They left out the vocoder solo, those bastards! Seriously, that solo kicks the ass of every guitar solo in the history of cock rock. Fo' real.

This just goes to show that even the cream of the a capella crop still sucks. It was good when it was called doo-wop.

I was so totally pissed when I found out Daft Punk's "Harder Better Faster Stronger" was just "Cola Bottle Baby" by Edwin Birdsong.

I really wanted to like "Bitches Ain't Shit" (I both love and am deeply disturbed by the Ben Folds version, and I was enough of a choir geek as a kid that I went out and made it my profession)... but it kind of fell flat with me. I think that it's because, with the exception of the second soloist, no one looked like they were having any fun. Even the non-white people in the group were white.

The Barber Agnus Dei/Adagio for Strings that jeversol refers to is amazing, and I'd highly recommend it. A brilliant recording conducted by choral grandmaster Robert Shaw can be found here.

I used to have an mp3 of Rockapella covering Basket Case.

I think up to that point, I thought they just broke up when the Carmen Sandiego game show went off the air.

I thought that was what was so great about it. If it had been me, I wouldn't have been able to go five seconds without laughing at how horrifically stupid the lyrics are.

Another link to Cola Bottle Baby. Tehloki - thanks for reminding me about that! I heard the original at a party years ago, and have been remembering on and off to find out what it was, and failing, ever since. My intermittent quest is over.

Awesome, I never knew there was a video of this! You can buy this arrangement for a very reasonable price if you want to give it a go with your group.

"It's impossible for a capella groupie chicks to shut up and listen"

It's not so much the groupie chicks as it is half the campus, drunk, crowded into the concert hall for a Knights concert on the last day of classes. Sorry about that.

On a different note, it's very, very surreal to have someone in New York post a link to a video of an a capella group on my campus of 1,600 in the middle of nowhere Minnesota. Creepy.
