Lot's of people are "not interested in politics". In fact, a lot of people aren't interested in much of anything. Go on a social networking or dating site and view. Or just go out to a bar or club and ask around. Most of the people in the interview seem to have an opinion that's not particularly outrageous (and since they're quoted, I'll give the benefit of the doubt that their full answers contained more analysis). Ergo, was the point to look at how moronic this princeton hippie sounds? Or just a choice funnier quote from the melange?

So, are you saying you knew it was an easy target post? Yes and no. Obviously a one-link post to something via Wonkette is hardly going to enter the MetaFilter hall of fame. But on the other hand it wasn't completely vapid. Not all of us spend a great deal at time at Bungalow 8 (although I've been to some similar places in the company of minor celebs and agents) and so this particular prism is an interesting way to view them. You might think it's fish-in-a-barrel but I think that's a pretty jaded point of view. To me, it's not so much shooting fish in a barrel, as admiring their pretty but fucked up colours. I do think that , on the whole, 'ho hum, what a boring FPP' comments are cheaper, easier, and more boring than the FPP they attach themselves to. A cheap shot at a cheap shot is still a cheap shot.

I don't think cherry picking quotes from drunk people at a bar makes for an inspiring piece of journalism. I love how the writer seems to be fluent in the latest fashions and designers, yet tries to keep some sort of moral distance from the people he "interviews." All in all, this is total crap. What is the value of this fpp? Am I supposed to hate other people for being more vacuous than I? Now, I don't doubt for a second that this type of person exists. However, a close friend of mine was present at an event (i'm trying to be vague) that was actually covered by the New York Observer. The article that ran completely misrepresented what had occurred, and, more than just misquoting many of the participants, actively invented many of the details. So, perhaps this is a completely accurate representation of the statements these people made, but the overly flaky quotes have me a bit skeptical.

I found the article interesting because I have, in fact, wondered what people who live differently than me (and, oh, how very differently) think. I realize for the sake of shock journalism that certain choice quotes were used and if I really wanted to find out what the fabulous people think I should go ask them. Except, no, I can't. You know, I got done over really badly by a reporter this year and now I know a lot more about how this works. You have to understand that all these people probably said tons of perfectly rational things to this reporter and he selected the one or two things that they said, out of context, that made them look bad. The reporter had the angle for his story, so he ignored anything at all that didn't relate to his idea. You have to understand that they were probably sitting in a club, drunk, and some guy came and asked them a bunch of goofy questions about the war and smiled at them when they said something funny so they said more funny things. This article is complete bullshit. If you believe this reflects what really happened, you are naive. NOT, I hasten to add, that I'm sure there aren't tons of vapid people in denial about the war -- or even that some of the people interviewed really are this way. But you have to assume that it's basically a "pack of lies" -- that the reporter selected a few lines from thousands. And yes, I am bitter.

I'm just amazed that people will pay $350 for 750mL of 40% aqueous solution of ethanol. That's like $0.50 of ingredients and a couple of bucks for the bottle. This is why I don't drink with chemists.

I don't want to support these people, and I don't frequent those types of bars, and have certainly never had bottle service (I'm more on the PBR budget), but at least in Chicago, there's a minimum of 5 or so people for bottle service, and you get a table. So for a $350 bottle, about $70 each you get a bunch of drinks (mixers generally included) and a table at a crowded club. That's not that bad of a deal, if you're into that kind of scene. And oaf, I've never said this to anyone online, but shut the hell up. I wouldn't be surprised if a large portion of students without any financial aid are going to state/community colleges and their parents make enough to force them to pay for the whole thing thanks to the fucked up calculations of FAFSA. I don't know when you were last in college, but the "expected family contribution" is an unrealistically high percentage. And if you're under 24, it doesn't matter at all if your parents are supporting you or you're paying your own way, it's all based on your parents' income.

Yeah, I've been taken to this kind of place by an ex-girlfriend (also in the meat-packing district) and these quotes don't surprise me, they just read incorrectly in print. Which is clearly what the Observer was going for. The summary of bottle service above was correct. It's still ludicrously overpriced, but it's not like you're walking up to the bar and saying, "VODKA, NOW!" and them saying, "$350, please." It's part of what comes with the private-party aspect of it, and mixers and a lot of other things are involved. Still, not my scene, but it can be fun for a night. These are people who were out trying to have fun for a night. Most are probably vapid and ignorant, as is most of America. Most, also, sounded about on par with any man-on-the-street interview you could do, especially if you were feeling particularly discourteous. And all, remember, were out partying when they were approached in a large club for a quick quote for the Observer (A.K.A. the "They Still Exist?" paper of New York.) By and large I'm surprised they sounded this good. What's funny to me is that the NYO is the most blue-blooded paper in the history of New York. They're the ones who print a whole section every week on Park Avenue engagements.I haven't seen their salmon-colored pages on any newsstands in several years, but if they're eating their own young like this, then there must be some financial trouble going on.
