Yeah, Montaigne is great. But why was he included; he did not paint that portrait himself, did he? Or Schopenhauer for that matter.

I suppose the stretch would be that Montaigne portrayed something of himself in his favoured medium, the written word, jouke, but to be honest I wasn't thinking that hard about it - unlike a certain Bordeaux gentleman of letters.

Of course his writings are a self-portrait but that's not what Verhulst is able to show on his site... Oh well. Still; Montaigne is amazing. How can it be that he sounds more modern than people from the start of the 20th century f.i.?

I guess moral courage and honest inquiry stand the test of time. I even ploughed through his Apology for Raymond Sebond to much reward, a work which on the face of it has little to say to the modern reader. I'd best stop derailing now.
