"by popular acclaim, Lenny Bruce is the new patron saint of American Samizdat" amberglow gets a mention there

Lenny is great but that American Samizdat site simply takes a strong leftist view (nothing wrong with that per se) without offering any solutions to anything. It is what I call the Ralph Nader approach: this and that are bad but I can not tell you what I would do that would change things.
Bruce got in real trouble when the Church came down on him in Chiocago, with of course cooperation via the police and elected officials. Little has changed. This being said, I now wait for my detractors to denounce me. Hint: go to the site and show me where I am wrong.

The 1974 Bob Fosse film, Lenny, with Dustin Hoffman in the lead, is a classic.

Not to derail ... Say what you will about Nader, but one thing that did set him apart was his practical solutions to the problems he outlined.

A week or so ago Newsweek ran a feature article on "Boomer Humor" that cited Mad magazine and the Three Stooges as major influences but didn't even mention Lenny Bruce. I sent them a letter basically saying that if Western philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato (as Whitehead said), post-Vietnam American humor is a series of footnotes to Bruce.

Well, western humor since VN may as you say be a series of footnotes to Bruce, but don't forget Richard Pryor.

I just want to recommend Tony Hendra's book Going Too Far as both an excellent overview of "Boomer Humor" and as a source of some interesting observations about Bruce. Oh, and thanks for the post!
