Not an X-wing, Not Hoth.
But pretty zoomy...
posted by Balisong at 7:01 PM on March 1, 2007

The preferred method of zooming over Hoth was the Snowspeeder, which I believe to be a modified A-wing.

Cool vid, tho.

What Balisong said. You, sir, are a liar!

Ha ha, vronsky fails at geek!

Definitely a place where having a plane that can climb straight up is an asset.

What is that thing at Mauvoisin? An ice dam?

I kept finding myself hitting the numeric keypad to look out the side window like you would in MS Flight Simulator. Neat video!

Hoth was Norway?
posted by muckster at 7:22 PM on March 1, 2007

And where did they cut the gondola wire doing just this? Italy?
posted by muckster at 7:23 PM on March 1, 2007

Wow, if that were in a club and I were on acid, I don't think I would be able to leave the club.

Beautiful. The Matterhorn is breathtaking.

Great vid, but I think it's a double.

Well I'll be damned. Look at that. An eviscerated Tauntaun right before the first marker.

Spectacular.

Though the music was annoying.

The "Star Wars Databank" says "The Hoth battle sequences were filmed on location atop the Härdangerjøkulen Glacier in Finse, Norway." Just in case you were curious.

It's just what it looks like - the Mauvoisin dam. Built in the late 1950's - as was the Hawker Hunter. They both appear to have aged remarkably well. Would that I could say the same!

Such natural beauty reduced to a clip for cheesy scifi. Best of the web for sure!

'Flight sim' mode in Google Earth is also tits for those who like zoooming.

So, can any pilots tell about how high off the ground that plane was at around 2:20?
posted by Richard Daly at 8:04 PM on March 1, 2007

not to take away from the beauty of the video, but did it seem awfully slow to anyone else?

I'm sure it's just an illusion brought about by the quasi-fractal like nature of the landscale, and that the spatial scales were larger than they appeared, but even when the plane was close enough to cause a shadow, there didn't seem to be that sense of speed.

Not to be a killjoy or anything, but am I the only one who remembers this this from a few years ago?

still, it's awesome footage, mesmerizing really.

That is one of the geekiest link titles I've seen in a while.

Vronsky - thanks much for the link - after a rotten day, speeding over Swiss Alps in a fighter jet is just what I needed - awesome! .... PS - Do the Swiss really need fighter jets? Chocolate missles and Swiss knife smartbombs?

Heh richard daly, just clicked your profile. Truer words have never been spoken. Cheers.

And I was hoping a pilot would chime in about the height too.

and thanks speug. It is the second highest dam in the world. Cool.

inthe80s: To answer your question, no no.

"Do the Swiss really need fighter jets?"

if they want to spread "neutrality" around the globe they do.

And a 10 minute star wars clip on you tube?? How is that possible? Does the dark lord know about this?
Half of the vids I've bookmarked have been taken down already. (I really miss the Keyra Augustina one.)
