It looked like the dog has grown to love the cat but the cat still hates the dog. That cat was slapping that dog's head all over the place. And you could totally see the cat hissing.

Clearly that dog has yet to learn that cats rule while dogs, quite literally, drool.

Oh shit! I've blown my demanding, seasoned internet veteran cover! Must compensate!

Why the hell is this on the blue? What were you thinking? Did you think I'd actually ENJOY this?

This is NOT the best of the web.

I am not impressed.

Meh. I have cats, I have dogs. This is what they do. I can guarantee that the puppy wasn't hurt. It was scared because it can't figure out what it did that made the other smaller white dog so angry.

The only thing that will come of this is that the cat will rule the house, the dog will defer to it, lest it get another wack on the nose, (I once visited a house with four or five pure-bred Doberman Pincers who lived in abject fear of one smallish grey cat. I actually witnessed the cat stare a dog out of it's spot on the sofa. This hundred or so pound dog actually slunk away from an animal that weighed less then it's head. Amazing.)

The dog in time may learn it's one and only secret weapon. The bark. It won't stop the power of the cat, but it may get it to stop bossing the dog around for a couple of minutes.

Yes. Cats are calculating killers and haters. They merely feign love to curry favor and comfort. Secretly they even hate you.

While dogs are guileless lovers and givers who can surmount any natural prejudice and will risk their own lives to help their pack.

That poor fool puppy will only know love in his heart. While that cat will do nothing but scheme for the day it will taste sweet puppy blood.

Just a few posts back someone was complaining about all YouTube videos having shitty music, then this 400lb gorilla comes and proves them wrong.

For the record I enjoyed this tremendously. But I'm also getting a tattoo of puppies and kittens sleeping together to remind me that, unlike drugs and unlike sex, some things in this acrid, ugly, world make me genuinely happy - so perhaps I'm biased.

The only thing that will come of this is that the cat will rule the house, the dog will defer to it, lest it get another wack on the nose

Heh, that could be describing Chez Snark, quin. I'm bipetual, and the kitty was a DC street feral who was largely raised by my previous dog, a malamute. So little six pound kitty is used to playing and snuggling with a hundred pounds of snowdog.

Years pass, the mal dies, far too young; kitty spends weeks sitting in the front room watching the door for him to come back. I finally get a new dog -- a sixty-pound elkhound. We make introductions, elkie takes a curious sniff at the funny-looking "little dog", cat thwaps him on the nose, and the hierarchy is set for life. (Even now, more than five years later, the cat can come up and try to initiate play and the moosedog will nervously retreat: he is just not going to risk a repeat performance.)

A few months later, I bring home another dog -- a 40-pound pit bull. She's sweet as pie, but dumb as a sack of hammers. So learning her place in the pack took quite a bit longer: sniff, nose-thwap, yelp, retreat, repeat. Puppy EVENTUALLY learns that the funny-looking little dog is calling the shots; kitty eventually accepts that the dog has been suitably trained, and now deigns to snuggle and play with her new subject. Puppy routinely brings peace offerings of her favorite dog toys, many of which are larger than the cat...although occasionally, when the cat is playing one of her favorite games of "sock the pibble on the head", there's still a faintly nervous "we're friends now, right? this is fun, right? you're not going to hurt me, are you?" look on her face.

(And as far as drooling goes...the only one of the lot who does it regularly is the tiny feline "alpha dog".)

Damned cat doesn't even understand Puppese. At least the young puppy has an excuse for not understanding Catin.

Come on, cat, it's a cute little puppy. You don't swat puppies, you fucking cuddle them.

One of the things I find most fascinating about cat/dog interactions, is how perfectly opposite they are from one another. Cats purr when they are happy- Dogs growl (the closest similar sound) when they are angry. To dogs, prolonged eye contact can be a sign of dominance, whereas cats staring and slow blinking is a sign of affection. Dogs roll on their backs as a sign of submission where cats voluntarily choose it as a style of combat.

It's nearly like they are hard-wired to not understand one another, and I'm always amazed when you see them so happily co-existing. It almost gives me hope for the world.

And Smilla's Sense of Snark, I think most of it has to do with when they are introduced. Whomever is in the house first seems to have high ground when it comes to seniority. We have four cats (one shy of being crazy cat people) the first three were here before our first dog. They only occasionally deign to acknowledge her existence, whereas the littlest Siamese cat we got between the two dogs finds the first fascinating and the other one... well, to be totally honest, she considers him prey. Despite the fact that he is three times her weight (which ain't saying much, he's just a little rat terrier). She stalks that poor pooch and takes every opportunity to pounce on him.

Thankfully he is about as clueless as a brick and is totally oblivious to her menace. He just thinks she is petting him. Really fast. And he tries to give her Big Kisses in return for the favor.

The whole thing is, of course, very entertaining.

One of the things I find most fascinating about cat/dog interactions, is how perfectly opposite they are from one another.

Not to mention the VERY different meanings of tail-wagging! Stanley Coren goes into that whole cat-dog mixed signals thing in quite a bit of detail in one of his books...I think it was How To Speak Dog but I don't have my copy handy to doublecheck.

Although as far as the purr/growl thing goes...cats can certainly growl, too! At one point when she was "training" the pittie, she'd growl and charge her any time she spotted the poor dog (puppy meanwhile would instantly retreat and try to hide behind my legs). There definitely weren't any misread signals there.

(And yes, since it was all noise and posturing and nobody actually getting hurt, it was of course pure comedy gold.)

Seniority (I joke about "cat union rules") has to be part of it, but I think the personalities of the individual animals also comes into play. My old malamute preceded the cat by quite a bit, and had her ridiculously outsized -- yet he really let her get away with murder most of the time. She could eat and drink from his bowls, steal his toys, treat his tail as a giant cat toy, or hog his giant doggie bed, and he never objected to any of it. The only time he ever asserted his seniority... was when she tried to steal people food from my plate. That was pretty much the only time in his life I ever heard that dog growl: he knew who was supposed to be next in line for any tasty leftovers from the alphas, and it damn well wasn't the new kid!
posted by Smilla's Sense of Snark at 11:44 PM on March 6, 2007

stick to your guns kittie - he will sleep on the bed, he will piddle on your carpet - the only way to keep any semblance of order is to dominate and seeing as how humans are you are the one to do it!

This is why animals are so much better than kids. If you had a 5 week old kid and a 5 month old kid, they'd just sit there shitting themselves and drooling. They wouldn't fight or nuthin'.
