You know what bugs me is "Cingular is the new AT&T." It doesn't follow the "X is the new Y" pattern, where X replaces Y. Cingular is no more, and now it's called AT&T, so the slogan is backwards. It should be "AT&T is the new Cingular."

There are categories all over the map. I think the choice of left or right is sort of arbitrary but all the colors that are the new black are on the same side and all of the things relating to sex are on the same side (even if they're not connected to black). Whatever is connected to the left-hand black side has more in common with the other categories already located on that side and the same for the right side.

Aw, the chart missed out on snark is the new black. Lattiboy: The relationship between Metafilter and emoticons is a debate about "purposeful irony" and "obnoxious authenticity." For instance, you can say "Hey everybody LOL!! Funniest EVAR! :)))" but only if you don't mean it. If you actually mean it, I think Metafilter will collectively punch you in the face. However, you might be able to get away with saying something clever that's about 17-words long and offers some pithy commentary on the thread, and follow it up with a smiley, without causing too much damage. Basically, this place is a bunch of bullies in a conga-line underneath a Chinese dragon costume, and it will breathe fire at you if you break the rules, but the rules are only written on the inside of the costume.

Is the use of emoticons frowned upon? Yes. If so, what are the suggested protocols for intoning good natured fun? Tone of voice, which is hard but far from impossible to convey in writing. If you're worried about how something might be taken, you can always add "(Just kidding!)." A word to the wise: straightforward is often preferable to "ironic," even though the latter is default mode for many otherwise admirable people. And don't worry, if you get it wrong and offend the crowd, once the blood has sunk into the sands and the vultures have picked your bones clean, you will rise again, as good as new, to renew the fight, hopefully a bit wiser in the Ways of MetaFilter.
