Giant snails are parasite carriers, agricultural pests, good pets and totally delicious and nutritious! What more could you ask for in a slowly invading slimy overlord? Just be sure to protect your brains.

I bred snails as a child. Am I going to die?

These things are everywhere here in Anguilla, British West Indies! I imagine the caribbean locations stated at the end of that last link are a massiive understatment.

Thank you for posting this. There is alot of misinformation out there on this small island- most people think they're poisonous. I guess the meningitis thing is cause for alarm, but it seems like thorough cooking takes care of that.

Oh, and they're huge and very vocal when you smash 'em.

Like sucking jello through a straw over a bowl of rice krispies.

Like sucking jello through a straw over a bowl of rice krispies.

That has got to be one of the most descriptive food-related sentences I have ever read. lol

Great post. I love the increasing urgency of the "a slowly invading" links. And that YouTube video is awesome! The person's just like, "Yep, here it is: a giant snail. I am holding a giant snail."

These things are all over Okinawa. After it rains, it's almost impossible to walk anywhere without stepping on some of the smaller ones. That's when they swarm (self-link)

Those fuckers were the bane of my existence as a gardener in Hawai'i. And now I'm probably going to have such unpleasant dreams about the crunching squishing oozing noises of smashing them to bits on the pavement. THANKS MEFI!

Did I mention that I love this post? The folktale was a great addition. Sidebar this I say!

All the 'giant snails are taking over' news articles seem a little silly (and potentially capitalizing on North American stereotypes about Africa) (Killer (aka Africanized) Bees anyone?) but ya, excellent post.

So, has anyone tried an giant escargot? Sounds delicious!

I kind of love snails, oddly enough. I've gone so far as to get a nautilus tattooed on my back. There's something appealing to me about animals who carry around shells on their back, it's like they have their homes with them!

(I also have a turtle tattoo. It's a problem theme.)

The "Powelliphanta" giant land snail.
we have some giant land snails here in NZ, I remember travelling the the west coast with my father and finding one in the bush. I was about twelve at the time, and i could barely hold it in one hand. Must have been close to eight centimetres across. amazing things..
great post, thanks.

there's been a huge debate about one particular species, the "Powelliphanta Sp.Augustus" which is confined to *one* habitat in thick bush, but, unfortunately for the snails, over rich coal deposits.. in the end, the snails lost. sigh.

I had to stop watching the video, but not out of disgust. Far from it. I stopped watching because I was starting to think the snail was kind of cute, and I don't want any emotions to stand in the way of my eating these.

If you held one of those things up in front of me I would have a fear reaction that would melt my face like Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark while I simultaneously shit my liquified insides out Ebola-style.
