It's worth noting that raw google searches for sucks and rocks return significantly different numbers—sucks gets about 48M hits, rocks about 93M. Implications of skewing that may or may not have much to do with true suckage vs. rockage: sucking might be under-represented across the board. posted by cortex at 4:50 PM on March 14, 2007
Next Google tool: A cute little search interface to tell you how old the link you just found is. "Sucks vs Rocks is....from before cavemen invented fire." posted by DU at 4:54 PM on March 14, 2007 [1 favorite]
vacapinta, I think your number survey may have been skewed by the existence of the TV show titled "30 Rock". posted by wendell at 5:00 PM on March 14, 2007
NM, I am a dumas. I'm thinking of googlefight. This is way rocksier than the comparatively sucks googlefight. Googlefight sucks, does it suck rocks! posted by DU at 5:06 PM on March 14, 2007

therefore this site now sucks.
Sorry quarter waters and a bag of chips, but you appear to be mistaken. Seriously, that does suck, but the site is nonetheless fun.
Huh... some variations on a generally disliked individual.
That's actually more interesting than comparing different things, as it's a pretty good system for determining how people who like something refer to it vs. how people who dislike the same thing refer to it. For example.
Things that annoy me: non-ASCII characters are messed up when you try to create a link and there's no way to remove a search from a list, so if you mistype something and you want to pass a list on as a link, you have to start all over or search through the resulting link for the part to take out. posted by scottreynen at 5:47 PM on March 14, 2007
This just in: The Web hates tits, but loves boobies.
Maybe they just love to suck tits? (Seriously, I don't think this thing cares about the grammar, just the number of times the words appear together) posted by delmoi at 5:48 PM on March 14, 2007
wendell, your name keeps flashing by in the 'latest searches' field.
I like to think it's because you are the metric standard against which all other things are measured.
This amuses me. posted by quin at 5:50 PM on March 14, 2007

If you click on "How does it work?" you'll see that this actually uses the Yahoo! API, not the Google API, which is pretty much dead (they stopped issuing new API keys in December, I believe). Google has a new AJAX search API, but its purpose and implementation are competely different; it's for putting simple Google-branded searches onto your site, with the ultimate purpose of driving more traffic to Google, and not for doing interesting stuff like this.
Google pretty much abandoned the Google API about three days after they released it. They never updated or enhanced it, and it eventually began to break in odd ways. Too bad. It had a lot of potential. Good to see Yahoo! is picking up the slack. posted by staggernation at 7:13 PM on March 14, 2007
Just for the hell of it, I typed in "Michael Jackson" and it gave me a question mark in return. Everything else I typed in had a rating, but no rating for him. Hmmm. posted by miss lynnster at 7:17 PM on March 14, 2007
Yahoo's Search API is currently used for results, since Google's SOAP Search API is deprecated and only allows 1,000 queries per day. Way to go, Google! posted by pruner at 9:56 PM on March 14, 2007

My apologies for giving Google credit that should have gone to Yahoo in the original post. To try to make it up, I'd like to say "Yahoo rocks, Google sucks" where the Yahoobot can see it and affect future searches.
And, just because it must really suck to get a 3.3 when so many other MeFites are 10.0, I'd like to say "stavrosthewonderchicken rocks". posted by wendell at 12:45 PM on March 15, 2007 [1 favorite]
It looks like PC's suck, but Macs suck more, Windows REALLY sucks, Unix is 3 times as good as windows, but Linux is even better, and BSD wipes them both off the map. However, the Internet is better than everything. posted by tehloki at 3:05 PM on March 15, 2007
