How I (wish I) spent my summer vacation

Eyes on the Nations is a web site by a young man from North Carolina named Jordan Hill. He's working in various corners of the world to help with community development as a part of a soft christian missionary approach for the University of the Nations and Youth With a Mission. He's also a talented and curious photographer with an eye for people, places and critters. (Warnings: NSFW if you haven't ever seen old issues of the National Geographic. Worse, some of this is Xanga)

"some"? All of it is Xanga.

But, I have to admit it was worth the wait. I was fully prepared to default to LOLXTIANS... but this guy is doing good work, actually changing the world. And his pictures are lovely.

I hope Jordan Hill makes more people think about spreading good by doing good... as opposed to the more popular tack of trying to spread good by admonishing others how to behave.

Thanks for the link!

Eh, I've heard about plenty of kids who travel around the world admonishing the natives too. Obviously there are good Christian ministries and bad ones.

Oh... My dear dear NatGeo. I blame it for my strange fetishes.

Sorry about the "some." I didn't realize that the whole thing was xanga at first because the pages don't suck as much as usual.

I was also leery of the missionary aspects, at first. But looking around the web I found that there are criticisms of Youth with a Mission for not being Christian enough and for respecting local cultures too much. Also, the photography is great.

Oh, no doubt there are some schmuck missionaries out there.

But, I was thinking more of the American evangelists whose maxims seem to be "do as I say, not as I do." I'd like to see them out building drinking-water collection facilities and helping sustainable development.
