Ugh, it crashed my browser. I won't be revisiting. I always thought dookie.com was funnier (but just as annoying).

Wow. He was right, you *DID* tell others.

Script kiddies with nothing better to do. Neat. Amusing, yes, but not exactly effective. This one is a piece of cake to side step, and here's the code you used to prove it.
Altered, so it doesn't work here, of course.

BTW, this post (and a couple others) cinches it. No more self-promotional links. I'm writing posting guidelines tonight, which I will force first-time posters to read, and then I'm going to prevent someone from posting a link to the frontpage if they've never posted a comment. Also: 24 hour waiting period on posting rights to the front page. I want people to lurk and get a feel for the place before posting something on the main page. Oh yeah, and one big thing I've neglected to mention here: No Marketing Crap. People are posting press releases for their own company, as if the audience of MF cares about their company. The point of MF is that we, the little people, go out and find interesting stuff. If your company is interesting, we'll mention it, but don't post it expecting traffic and sales.

this stupidity is bumming me out.

I hate to be the "thought police" here, but until we get better at self-policing, I'm going to have to put some barriers to entry.

Apparently Mr. Cranky Pants had a point. It's just about impossible to underestimate the general populace. Remember the good old days of metafilter? You know, last week...

I knew that posting policy would come up sooner or later...heh.

Um, the "Mr. Cranky Pants" comment was meant to be a lighthearted poke at Jason, not a mean spirited slam. I realized that he doesn't necessarily know my posting style well enough to know that, and there's no edit feature (yet). No offense intended, Jason.

Should starting calling you DisclaimerUncleJoe....
don't worry, I think Mr Cranky Pants still has a since of humor buried deep down inside him...
really deep down....in well...thats been filled with concrete....that dried up a long time ago...

By trying to make the site idiot-proof, I know I'm chasing my own shadow, I know I'm trying to take a closeup picture of the horizon, (insert futility metaphor), but I hope the slight delay-to-post rules I stated above work. If not, I know I'm digging my own grave here.

What's that old saying? Make it idiot-proof and they'll build a better idiot?

That's Captain Cranky Pants to you! Or perhaps Captain Reality Pants?

And I like the idea of having users "earn" the right to post as a compromise between the perceived elitism of having only approved posters and the crap-o-rama free-for-all MeFi is now experiencing. Perhaps a little quiz they have to take, or only posting after a week or 10 comments, whichever comes first. How about attaching karma to posters instead of posts?

Anyway.

Oddly enough, I very seldom get caught with my overoptimism-pants down, but I supposed I did this time. I was in a neo-boomer park-the-vw-busses-in-a-circle-and-start-a-commune luf-fest fantasy world, where all the posters were smart and all the links were above average. The new concern is that people will post meaningless comments in order to gain status so that they can spam the front page - the way that some posters gain status levels on UBB-Style bulletin boards.

Oh, and Jason? Those rumors about me writing a java based "Whack-a-Kottke" game were completely blown out of proportion. What I said was, I'd like to hit you in the head with a big mallet, then go out for a cuppa java.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Hey Matt? About that "modify" feature...

I have some sort of font corruption issue that causes the form type to be rendered in some weird semi-illegible decorative font, so I have a bit of trouble proofing before I post. supposed was supposed to be suppose, and it *was* a luv-fest, not a luf-fest. I may be wet behind the ears, but even I don't believe in free luf.
