Parrots in Brooklyn

Wild Parrots in Brooklyn, New York. In the late 1960s, a shipment of Argentine Monk Parakeets, destined for pet stores in America, was accidentally released at New York’s Idlewild Aiport. The parrots have had a rough history surviving in New York, including mafia involvement and a prison stand-off. Today, they even face attacks from poachers. But, the wild parrots continue to live and love in Brooklyn.

We've got at least two distinct populations of wild parrots here in San Francisco, as well.

Hundreds of rose-ringed parakeets (halsbandparkieten) in the Vondelpark in Amsterdam.
Their population is exploding as a result of the mild winters we had.
Similar populations in The Hague and Delft, and a lot of cities in Europe I imagine.

And across the Hudson river, in an Edgewater NJ park, I've seen something similar. The coloring was similar, but they were larger than parakeets. They looked like the stereotypical pirate's parrot. Small flocks of them were flying from tree to tree last summer.

Awwww... so sweet - someone should knit them some little birdy sweaters. But then, people probably said that about the first starlings introduced to the New World, too.

I see the Telegraph Hill parrots in SF pretty regularly. They're all over the place. That last link was cute. Snorgle!

How does the weather in New York compare to the weather in Argentina, anyhow? I'm just wondering how hard or easy it was for them to acclimate to the winter & summer temperatures.

I was riding through Prospect Park one day (in July of 2005), when I saw one of these critters. I thought I was hallucinating, I was absolutely floored.

The very next day, I opened up MeFi and saw myopicman's post.

Plate of shrimp.
