I vote for the exclamation point.

You could have just linked to a google search for trivia, you know.

Is there any particular reason that five of the links just point back to metafilter?

I'm not seeing anything particularly quiz-worthy about the blue.

The initial "Y" leads to a pretty good (if a bit Bible-heavy) podcast. The question mark leads to the Stanford Packet Archive, which is a huge assload of documents filled with questions from past college quiz bowls. There's a pretty good set of Buffy quizzes in there as well -- it's easy enough to find in chrismear's link.

hifiparasol, drop me an email if you've got links for those broken letters—got your trivia—and I'll clean it up.

Okay, the ? link just gave me flashbacks to writing those damn packets ($$ discount if you brought them to competitions.) One of the packets, somewhere, has a question that gives the instructions for making crack.

I'll get right on not clicking any of those.

Dammit, I checked this like five times before posting -- I don't know how I missed those.

I'll take "How to make sure none of your links ever get read" for 600 Alex.

Anybody in here got a good link for online repositories of erroneous published trivia so I can carp about this card?

I'm with you, cobaltnine. I never ended up writing an entire packet myself, but I contributed to a few. My favorite were the themed packets, or the ones for trash tournaments.

A few favorite college bowl moments:

Moderator: 40-30-20-10-5-1. For 40 points, name this sport.
(furious conferring)
Us: Uh, jai alai?
Moderator: Correct!

Moderator: (reading bonus) 30-20-10, name the historical figure. For 30 points, he was born on February 14th, 1815 to Jewish parents.
Me: Emperor Norton I
Moderator: (complaining to the timer) That's the whole clue? How could anybody-wait, what did you say?
Me: Emperor Norton I of the United States of America
Moderator: Wow. That's right!

Moderator: blah, blah, blah, used to be named 'Zaire'-
Me (buzzing in): Congo.
Moderator: Prompt.
Me: Uh...Republic of?
Moderator: Prompt.
Me: Uh...(brain quietly explodes and we lose 5 points)

My favorite was

Me: Lusitania

or

Moderator: the process by which Hy....
Me:Hydrogenation

Also, according to Ken Jennings book "Brainiac" the Crack question was a misunderstanding, the actual question was a recipe for cookies and they rang in and answered Crack

Statler and Hilton?! WTF? Why not Statler and Motel 6? Statler and Doubletree? Oh, that is so irksome!

Where were you before my "Jeopardy" appearance? I could have used these links! Probably wouldn't have helped me with the FJ question I missed anyway (sour grapes!).

Am I missing something? What's erroneous about the Muppets question? Wasn't he named after the Hilton's Waldorf-Astoria hotel in NYC?
posted by saraswati at 7:38 AM on April 14, 2007

saraswati: Well, I had no idea that the Hilton family or chain had anything to do with he Waldorf, but the question is still wrong, as the response "Hilton" does not "provide the name" of the Muppet "Waldorf." Also, there were other rotten questions in this edition, but this one was the most awful for mucking up the well known "Statler and Waldorf" pairing.

I have, in the past, collected erroneous or comical TP question cards. I presented one that misnamed "Frank" from Blue Velvet as "Francis." But my all time favorite was the one containing the question "What can stop the Duke of Earl?" That card made the question my personal motivational tautological mantra!

AV: I've been told that Trivial Pursuit deliberately included errors -- like dictionaries supposedly do -- so they would be able to prove it if another trivia company ripped off their questions.
