Not cool teaching a kid that young to talk like that. Do you really think she had any idea what she was saying? I suspect that they were feeding her sounds to imitate rather then saying, "here, say 'bitch'... now say 'asshole'". I thought it was perfectly funny, little/no damage was done and I'm sure she was having a great time.

There are some people that aren't into all the words. There are some people who would have you not use certain words. Yeah, there are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven of them that you can't say on television. What a ratio that is!! 399,993 to seven! They must really be bad. They'd have to be OUTRAGEOUS, to be separated from a group that large.

Yeah, it's a lot better when you teach children that those words are a Godless, evil offense & should never EVER be uttered. Because then they can have a lot more fun swearing like soldiers as adults. Poor kid has already had the joy of her coveted first swear words shot to Hell. Damn bad parenting.

So, I've always let my kid swear, mostly because my parents let me listen to too much Carlin as a kid. This leads to some very funny moments. Like, when he was 7, I had some friends over for a cookout. As a prank, I put some jalapeños on my son's burger when he wasn't looking. The look on his face was priceless enough, but when he figured it was me it was all "Goddamn it dad, what the fuck?!". The silence from my stunned friends and their wives was awesome. Kids are awesome.

A friend was telling me about this over dinner last night. I've got an 18-month old who's repeating everything right now, and I think it's hilarious. Of course, it wasn't hilarious when I taught my three-year old nephew to say "in your face!" over Thanksgiving. Apparently he's still not deprogrammed. We have friends who have a four-year old, and they don't try to censor her vocabulary. They try to teach her what's respectful when talking to others, but she'll still call the nice man behind the counter a fucker when he's out of cheese samples. Wow.

I was all for swearing around my twins, and letting them swear. Then my sister reminded me that "your kids are going to ride the bus with other kids, and they're going to teach the other kids those words. Do you want your kids to be THOSE kids?" So we've curbed the swearing, and soon we'll start working on knock-knock jokes instead.

I had a similar experience with my three year old nephew (who's now 16, I love bugging him about it) when, while standing by a large bay window, a large 18-wheeler drove by (this was on a small residential street, so it was not a common event) and he screamed "Holy fuck! A truck!". I completely lost composure. Everyone in the house heard it (parents, grandparents et. al) and not one of us could contain the laughter enough to say anything to him. Needless to say, he's a great guy and despite the lack of disapproval over the language use you'd hardly realize that he was scarred for life.
