Nice find. Reminiscent of Les Triplettes de Belleville, which must be seen. Beguiling music, as well. At first I thought the music was Paolo Conti, but instead it is the previously unknown and hard to google Pierre Caillot. Clearly we need more from these guys. Many thanks.

I really liked it. It makes me wonder if it was done with stop motion, computer animation, or computer animation emulating stop motion style. I felt sorry for the dude when he saw a picture of his papa. It lent some humanity to the man. I also want a red coat like his.

What a great video! If I guess correctly, this was done with CG, but made to look like stop motion. Now that CG has developed to the point where the images are very good, but not quite good enough (landing squarely in the bottom of the Uncanny Valley), I wonder if we are in for a bit of CGI impressionism. In other words, after a few hundred years of renaissance inspired realism, impressionism emerged, using a distinctly unrealistic style to evoke mood and emotion rather than using realism to convey and image or depict an event. Perhaps, like this video, CG have be used a bit more impressionistically to convey the mood or tone of the overall piece (like in this film). Specifically with genres like horror or fantasy, accuracy detracts from the psychological mood that is sought to be established. Is the fully rendered monster really more scary than an out of focus blur? In addition, could we now use CGI to resurrect old painting styles by apply them to motion pictures? I'm thinking here of that movie "What Dreams May Come", which though awful in plot, and brilliant three-dimensional impressionistic landscapes. How about films in cubism, or in the style of iconography?

These comments say it's stop motion puppetry, with CG effects overlaid. I would be very happy to see the sort of thing you're describing, Pastabagel. One of my all-time favorites in the IRTC was this Hokusai experiment. Even if you can imagine the same thing being executed better, it was such a refreshing change from the usual standard of photorealism that I really wanted to see more like it. Can you imagine an movie animated in rendered-woodcut style?
