They didn't report it here so I'm saying it's a hoax. If they were selling those shoes for real, BTTF.com would know about it and they'd be trying to get their cut. Great Scott! This guy, who dubs himself Britain's least famous celebrity, has worked on a prototype for a one man hoverboard, using leaf blowers! And it works! Even on water (tho it can't hold a person just yet - the leaf blowers are a little heavy themselves). He's abandoned the skateboard look and now it's shaped like a circle, but it's progress. Can we get there in eight years? Then be stylin' with the self-lacing Nikes? Only 'time' will tell. Two years ago there were talks of Michael J Fox reprising the role of Marty McFly. However, he'd now be story-wise, the equivalent of Doc Brown. His job would be to take all he'd learned from Doc in the years between parts three and four, and advise new youngsters in the dangers of time travel. I think it woulda worked. Yet another reason for stem-cell research. Help Fox and millions of others get past this Parkinson's thing - I WANT BACK TO THE FUTURE PART FOUR! (and my own flying car, dammit!)

A little while ago, I stole a coworker's nameplate off his cubicle wall, which is a lot funnier if you know how anal he is about these things. The plan was to just sit on it for a while and then return it in some mildly humorous fashion. Someone suggested photocopying and faxing it to him. I drew up a cover letter and couldn't think of a clever company or person it could be coming from, so I made it from Dr. Emmett Brown of Flux Capacitor, Inc. I did have the foresight to change the date to November of 1955. From there, things sort of took a life of their own. We took photos of the nameplate around downtown Chicago (inside a Red Eye kiosk, held by the Sky [women's basketball team] mascot, in front of the Chicago Theater, in the display window of some tourist shop on Michigan Avenue...we even got a sweet, confused couple to hold it in front of The Bean for a portrait). I created a Yahoo account--1point21gigawatts or something like that--and started emailing them to him (bccing everyone else in the office, of course). We were able to draw this all out over the course of about three weeks, ending it when he started to enjoy it himself. I had one particular photo pre-picked as the coup de grace, but then another coworker mentioned that the parking garage that houses our company car also has a Delorean. "It's derelict, the tires are flat," he told me, "people wrote 'Flux capictor, bitch' in the dust on the windows, but it's definitely a Delorean." I had to have this picture. And so we got it. Anyway, I sure wish I had a pair of these to wear around the office. Though they're nothing without the hoverboard.

Speaking of Deloreans, this has me wondering about a physics conundrum: Imagine if the time-travelling Delorean and Buckaroo Bonzai's Jet Car were traveling head-on toward each other. Then right at the moment of collision, the Delorean hits 88 MPH engaging its flux capacitor, while the Jet Car simultaneously engages its oscillation overthruster. What would happen?

Funny. I'm sure if they ever go in production they will be priced at something like $300 US a pair as they are targeting the relatively well off 25-37 year old demographic that was old enough to remember the movie but not old enough at the time to realize how juvenile the movie was. And if you buy them, at that age, you couldn't exactly wear them around. Thus it is the type of shoe you stick in your closet and show your friends at your next wine and cheese party. Maybe they would catch on with the younger crowd, but one would have to do a survey. It may or may not.

To address Dr-Baa's conundrum, it is my belief that the result of this apparent collision would be an anticlimactic nothing. The Delorean travels through time, the fourth dimension, while the Jet Car travels through the eighth dimension. The ultimate effect is that the flux capacitor and the oscillation overthruster both cause their respective vehicles to apparently "depart" from our three-dimensional awareness, so at the moment of impact, the Delorean would vanish from sight and the Jet Car would phase into immateriality. Null result. (Unless, as stenseng added, the streams were crossed. But that's an eventuality we don't want to contemplate.)

Sorry, Faint of Butt, but the oscilation overthruster would bathe the Delorean in quantum weirdness, the overthruster is a device "which systematically reorders matter by annihilating electrons and positrons." The Delorean would have been dismantled at a subatomic level before it got up to speed.
