Whoa. Is "Birdy Nam Nam" a reference to the Peter Sellers movie "The Party"? If so, it's the second one I've found to what I thought was an obscure (though hilarious) line in a relatively unknown film.

Man. I haven't even clicked any of the links yet and I'm already talking shit. I can't wait and wine and dine on these links, phrontist.

"Birdy Nam nam" is a whole scene in 'The Party" where Peter Sellars feeds the bird and accidentally kills it. One of the funniest (but a little dated) movies of all time.

Anyway, Q is the man. Remember the beginning of DemolitionPumpkingSqueezeMusik? His whole sex scratch on Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon album? This guy was there for everything. Fuck him for not even using a mixer at tableturns. Shit, this is the second hip-hop post in one, I think I'm going to bust out a copy of Super Duck Breaks and just listen to it straight through (hahaha!)

And.

Maybe you've sometimes "heard" crowds roaring from DJ recordings that are plugged straight into the board. That's because needles pick up ambient vibrations.

Well I once had the pleasure of seeing Kut Masta Kurt at a show tie a rubber band to the end of his needle, the other end to a fader, and pluck an entire bass line using his finger. Genius!!

I saw Grandmaster Flash twenty years ago amongst an incredibly diverse crowd...this was probably the first rap performance in Denver...and I thought it was a pretty cool temporary fad...just like my mother did about the Beatles in 1963.

Joke's on me, I guess.

Cool. I love early hip hop. I first saw a hip hop dj somewhere around 1979 and could not believe how much fun the music was. It sure blew away the typical dance music of the time (disco). He was rapping and scratching and had the house on fire. I saw a few more in clubs and then in '81 I heard Grand Master Flash open for the Clash. Wow, Wow, Wow. There were so many issues with their performance but the music was awesome.

I love early hip hop

While much of what I posted is fairly dated, turntablism is alive and well. Really, if you get a chance, watch Scratch. It's a shame that what most think of as hip-hop today is so distant from what the great stuff was and continues to be.

Turntablism is about directly maniuplating sounds in the time and amplitude domain - the possibilites are fascinating and I really don't think the surface has been... scratched.

Damn, what wonderful shit. Amazing. And the fact that MCs essentially usurped territory staked out by the DJs (aided by record-contract circumstance, but nonetheless) will end up being my most useful musical history lesson of the year. Great post.

Watching Z-Trip's demo at the end of Scratch was a good and bad thing: on the upside, my wife finally understood what was so amazing about turntablism, on the downside, DJ's were suddenly very hot: "Wow, they're dexterous with their fingers."

C'est la vie.

Of all the YouTube links though I find myself dredging this one up again and again.

4:02. Damn.

And phaedon, I know what you mean about the crowd noise through the needle. Pick up any of the Future Primitive CD's any you'll hear that a-plenty. God, those shows were amazing live.

I don't pretend to know much about the turntable-music scene and scratching, but I do love it. Birdy Nam Nam I found on youtube a few months ago and they are fucking amazing.

The 'Scratch' docu is entertaining, but unfortunately in too much of a hurry. It's a great overview, but seems unable to quite penetrate the surface of the whole scene. Worth watching just to see DJ Shadow's record store/collection.
