Given the fact that when one of my good college friends' grandfather died, there were some pretty ruthless posts on here about the guy, I have to wonder about the "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

I mean, he's responsible for a lot that many people here disagree with... What exactly do you expect?

Perhaps some respect for his loved ones that he left behind? Do you think we're all posting in a vacuum here? Do you think that a quick google won't turn up these threads?

How did your friend feel seeing nasty comments about his/her grandfather? How did you feel reading them? People could stand to have a smidge more respect.

Respect is earned, and many of us feel Valenti earned not that respect, but in fact earned our active disrespect by, in our opinion, disrespecting the public at large.

Tacos--why don't you suggest in MetaTalk something that Matt, Jessamyn, and/or Cortex can do: the obituary sanitizer! Here's how it works:

Someone writes a disparaging comment about a recently deceased celebrity:

"Jack Valenti was a fucking asshole!"

Various CSS, Ruby, and HTML filters are applied, producing

"Jack Valenti was a tenacious fighter!" Simple word substitution would work in most cases. And you get your clean obit.

Sarcasm aside, give the preaching a rest. This is the Interweb. People have opinions. Some not very nice, but then again people aren't always nice, even the nice ones.
