I tell you this—everything in fiction will one day become reality.

No, that's definitely super creepy.

I think it's Cthulhu's cousin.

Well, it doesn't look creepy, but you have to remind yourself that it literally feeds on dead gods and human fear.

I choose you, Grimpoteuthis!

Hmmm...doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I think it's kind of cute. But the thing with deep sea critters is that there is no sense of scale. So in my mind, this creature is 3 inches across, which equals "cute". If the reality is that this creature is 30 feet across, then it stops being cute and becomes the source of all that is terror.

AKA Cthulhu.

MetaFilter: Also known as Dumbo Octupus.

The link that Upton O'Goode posted claims that it's size is about 20 cm. That, I think, is big enough to be creepy, but not so huge to be terrifying.
posted by arcticwoman at 11:57 AM on May 4, 2007 [1 favorite]

It looks like it's the picture in this gallery (fourth one down), which says it's only 20cm (about 8 inches) in size. Incidentally, the other pictures in the gallery are also really awesome (and the seventh one down is a completely different grimpoteuthis).

Another view from UOG's link.

It doesn't quite look like Pikachu there. But holy crap, size up to 1.5 meters!

Yo man, this five foot monstrosity looks nothing like Peekawhatever, it looks the head of a Star Wars character. And you bet your ass its super creepy!

This fellow (from Upton O'Good's link) is quite cheeky! He should be Grimpo's wacky sidekick.

Is it just me, or does this one look like someone photoshopped a jellyfish together out of the moon, a mouth and some hands?

The one that dgaicun linked to has the coolest shoes.

Popkinson, if you switch the depth and diameter measurements on the octopus pic you posted, terror abounds.

this one immediately made me think of mick jagger.

Who is Mysterio, and why does he own this creature?

Is Batman involved?
posted by newfers at 8:47 PM on May 4, 2007

The Elder Things are down there, too.
posted by gamera at 9:12 PM on May 4, 2007

I don't see an apostrophe in "mysterios;" and, I believe the crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe. So shouldn't you have asked: "Who is Mysterios?"
posted by taosbat at 9:17 PM on May 4, 2007

I don't have a clue if the Batman is involved...he's not a relative or anything...
posted by taosbat at 9:19 PM on May 4, 2007 [1 favorite]

Mysterios... good point... sounds Greek. Wonder if he's a nice feller?

First rule of creepy: If it would cause you to flip out if it suddenly appeared beside you in the middle of the night, it's creepy.

First thought on seeing this thing? Zardalu. Run. (Yes, that's a single thought.)

ZED: Bring out the grimpoteuthis.

MAYNARD
I think the grimpoteuthis's asleep.

ZED
Well, I guess you'll just wake it up then, won't you?

Maynard opens a trap door in the floor.

MAYNARD
(yelling in the hole)
Wake up!

Maynard reaches into the hole and comes back holding onto a leash. He gives it a rough yank and, from below the floor, rises THE GRIMPOTEUTHIS.

The grimpoteuthis is a medium-sized deepwater squid they keep dressed from mantle to tentacle in black leather bondage gear. There are zippers, buckles and studs here and there on the body. On his head is a black leather mask with two eye holes and a zipper (closed) over its beak. They keep him in a hole in the floor big enough for a large dog, which is really far more room than the squid needs.

Grimpy is occasionally glimpsed camouflaged in red, accompanied by its young.
