This was unexpected, because of the obvious copyright problems of a work composed almost entirely from clips of other works, and perhaps also because of Godard's opinion of digital video (at 7:48). (Previously on MetaFilter.)

According to the DVDBeaver review the discs are actually region-free, despite what Amazon says. I haven't yet received my copy, so I can't personally confirm this.

the version at gaumont.fr is supposed to be newer; region-free and english subtitles... great to see this. me, i'm waiting for more greenaway, obscure fellini, etc...

Cool story, thethirdman: When I got to Region 2 Land, I went to Curry's (kind of like Radio Shack) and the manager there told me exactly how to hack the El Cheapo Deluxe DVD player he just sold me. It's now 'region free' which means it'll play anything... usually.

The version for sale at Gaumont (which I have just bought) says it is multizone, which i guess mean region free.

Just in case anyone is still interested, I have the set from Amazon.fr in hand now and it's definitely the region-free Gaumont discs. When they get it back in stock, Amazon's shipping to the US is somewhat cheaper than Gaumont's.
