The whole process took about two months. I had earlier done a blog post with the 1-100 quotes listed, but when I went to do the video, I decided to change a bunch of them for various reasons. About a third of these I knew off the top of my head, and the rest I found through relentless Googling and IMDb-ing.

Be a movie nut and remember a bunch of 'em top of mind; fill out the remainder of the list with keyword searches against imdb and other such sites; acquire scenes from personal library, rentals, loans, and torrents; fine-cut them for flow, drop 'em in a timeline, and hit "export". Great idea, nice execution.

Nice find! I'll be sending that link to several movie-crazy friends. It was fun to see that you can identify some movies in seconds, while others take quite a lot longer. Personally, I can do the movies in color pretty well, but my black and white film knowledge is sorely lacking...

Interesting that some of the most obvious "number" movies were not used for their respective spots in the list: 48 Hours, Catch-22, 12 Angry Men, Se7en, etc. Entertaining nonetheless. I laughed at number 8 (Office Space), which I've seen many times but didn't see coming.

Fun, and in some ways more significant to my mind than any of the crap AFI has spewed in recent years. Perhaps because this is a more objective and less arbitrary collection of 'best of cinema' stuff. When someone tries to say "the 100 best X kind of films ever" the results can never live up to any single individual's expectations. Someone's always gonna be upset that One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest wasn't higher on the list and the next person will question why that movie was on the list at all. Even if the list was "top 100 movies with elbows in them."

Thanks for the post, Stan. Not only a great idea for a short movie, but also extremely well done. You think the quote about eating the 50 eggs would be best, then comes the .44 Magnum ("the most powerful handgun in the world"), and the 39 steps. But in the end, what could be cooler than "These go to 11." A few years ago I realized I'd seen 78 of the AFI top 100 movies list, and over the last few winters I've been watching the rest. Finally finished them off a few weeks ago with one I didn't like much (Silence of the Lambs), one that was o.k. (A Place in the Sun), and one I really liked (Goodfellas). I doubt that I have the stamina to take on The Worst 100 Movies; I've only seen 5 so far.

I've seen far too many of those worst 100, but I object to Mars Attacks being on there. I know, a lot of people don't like that movie, whatever. If they're going to include Mars Attacks, and NOT include Mitchell, then they're saying that Mars Attacks is worse than Mitchell. Mitchell is abominable, and only ever redeemed by being one of the best MST3K episodes ever (along with Manos Hands of Fate which is rightly included on this list). They don't have to like Mars Attacks, but to say it's one of the worst movies ever made, and then not include one of the actual worst movies ever made is horrendous.

The inevitable gaffes on Worst lists remind me of Ebert's Oscars analysis from a while back: just as Best foo should often be read as Most foo for Academy purposes ("Most acting!" "Most costume design!"), some of the things on the list aren't Worst in any responsible sense, they're just Most Zinged. "Hey, remember when Hudson Hawk came out? Boy did that ever get a lot of shit talked about it! Yes, sir, those were some real zings."

As cortex says, they're just the best known films that some people decided, for some reason, they didn't like. The actual worst movie I think I ever saw (except for a few incredibly boring French ones I could barely sit through) was Surf Nazis Must Die. Not on the list.
