Well-executed, whimsical, surprising, funny, weird, wise -- I thought. It's a fantasy comic that channels both the look and the peripatetic scope of a Seuss story (I'm thinking in particular of, "I had trouble in getting to Solla Sollew," if I remember it right). I mentioned the Final Fantasy games in the title because there are some plot turns in Rice Boy that seemed predictable to me in a way familiar from the games. That's good and bad, though. Those plots survive because they work, and the familiarity gives the whole thing a slightly feeling. Anyway, if you read it, you'll probably find more interesting things to say about it. Enjoy! posted by grobstein at 7:58 PM on May 17, 2007
*"slightly feeling" was meant as "slightly mythic feeling", by analogy to the way in which the familiar plots from classical myth were used and reused. posted by grobstein at 8:02 PM on May 17, 2007
I luvs me some Rice Boy. Such simple, sad, oneiric beauty.
Great stuff. I'll be reading this from now on. posted by pointilist at 9:43 PM on May 17, 2007
I hope someone from Studio Ghibli sees this. posted by stavrogin at 11:09 PM on May 17, 2007
Sometimes I wish these things would only get posted when they were done with, so I could read them all the way through. Awesome, though, thanks! posted by thethirdman at 1:20 AM on May 18, 2007

Great find. Bookmarked. It shares some themes with Final Fantasy, but also ones found in Star Wars, Seven Samurai, Lord of the Rings, Wheel of Time, etc.
Some of the artwork reminds me of Fantastic Planet. posted by smoothvirus at 1:45 PM on May 19, 2007
