Violence in Lebanon

Newsfilter: A shopping mall and parking garage were just bombed in Lebanon. No one has announced responsibility yet. So far one woman is confirmed dead. So far only Al Jazeera has a story on this specific bombing, but it comes in the wake of more violence in Lebanon today.

This is the main news on all of the Arabic TV news channels right now of course. According to the Al Jazeera article, the bombing was in the Christian sector of Beirut. This comes "after day-long battles in the northern port city of Tripoli between Lebanese troops and members of Fatah al-Islam in which at least 37 people were killed" (from the Al-Jazeera article).

On a personal note, this is the first time that I've seen a news story like this from the Arabic perspective. My Arabic isn't good enough to pick up everything they're saying -- but I did hear 15, and my Egyptian friend confirms that the size of the bomb placed under the car was 15kg, which apparently is fairly large for a car bomb.

I love how the term "newsfilter" has gone from a deragatory word used to demean a person's post to being a simple designator.

It can be both.

Every single one of Al-Jazeera's top news headlines is about bombs going off and people dying. Not that I wish to appear insensitive to this ever-mounting pile of victims, but what makes this particular attack any more newsworthy or notable than the dozens of similar attacks perpetrated across the Middle East on a daily basis?

Today has really been the pits for posting. I've flagged four posts as "noise" so far.
