I try to treat all conspiracy theories with a bit of respect. I’ve come to see them as gods for paranoid skeptics like myself, sort of a last ditch attempt to create some invisible force (sadly malevolent) pulling the strings of chaos. And I’ve always been a chem-trails man. Steam the skeptics claim? I’ve never seen steam shoot out of say a teapot and hang there for hours in the kitchen. But my beliefs stem mostly from personal observation. In the past ten years that I have been aware of their presence I have indeed grown flabby, weaker and even lost a good deal of my hair.

I saw an offical report that stated half of the CIA's budget goes to create misinformation. What concerns me most is that there are fewer and fewer people in the US with the intellectual capacity to sift the wheat from the chaff.

What concerns me most is that there are fewer and fewer people in the US with the intellectual capacity to sift the wheat from the chaff. I don't think it's capacity, I think it's laziness. It's just easier to sit back and type LOLZ TINFOIL HAT BATSHITINSANE ROTFL than to actually challenge your own assumptions about things and maybe do a little research. None of this is to say that many conspiracy theory purveyors aren't as lazy and intellectually dishonest as the people the knee-jerk against them (they're both just as bad), but a little critical thinking can help you see what's bullshit from what potentially has a basis in fact.

There's a lot of good writing on comspiracy theories out there now. Here's a collection with some of it. Basically, being oppression, fear, and hatred make people batshitinsane. Sometimes the most grandiose fantasies are built on nuggets of truth. And everyone loves a story.

Years ago, I saw at least part of a William Cooper segment on the JFK murder. Cooper exhibits the Zapruder film, and proposes that the DRIVER turns around and shoots Kennedy with a chrome plated .45 pistol. No, I'm not kidding... Sadly, the Cooper segment on Google seems to be unavailable at the moment. I was looking forward to another "woogasm"...

As for the Third Reich, there really were a number of high up Nazis who believed some of the most astonishing BS. Ever hear of "Cosmic Ice"? Quite simply, Cosmic Ice says that there are exactly three things in the universe: the Earth, the sun, and ice. The stars are huge ice crystals reflecting sunlight, likewise the planets and the moon. Moreover, there have been several moons throughout history, one would crash into the Earth and cause huge natural disasters and then the Earth would pull in another huge chunk of ice to be the new moon. Like all good nutballs the followers of Cosmic Ice were convinced that the truth of their position was being hidden by a vast conspiricy. This belief, I'd assume, was difficult to hold on to as the Nazi party rose to power, because Cosmic Ice was embraced by a number of prominant Nazis and eventually was so popular in the Nazi party that they actually had to publish pamphlets letting the public know that they didn't have to believe in Cosmic Ice if they wanted to be Nazis. Search for either "Cosmic Ice Theory" or "Welteislehre", its great stuff. I can't decide if Cosmic Ice or Velikovsky's rantings are more entertaining. Personally, I think its a shame that the grand old conspiricies of yesteryear are being supplanted by these newfangled conspiricies. Chemtrails and September 11 loons just don't seem to have the same je ne sais quoi as Cosmic Ice and fluoride loons....

The "Occult History of the Third Reich" series is a pretty crappy treatment of an interesting subject. There's the occasional nugget of interesting info in there, but if you're seriously interested in that subject, I recommend Nicholas Goodrick-Clarkes two books "The Occult Roots of Nazism" and "Black Sun: Aryan Cults, Esoteric Nazism, and the Politics of Identity", both of which are excellent, serious academic works.
