For months IDT Energy has been accused by Con Edison customers of fraudulant "sales" tactics. The Consumerist decided to hire a journalist to investigate how the company conducts business by getting hired by Midtown Promotions, the company IDT uses to canvas and bully ConEd customers into switching to IDT Energy. Today is Day One in a multi-part series investigating the underhanded practices of an unregulated utility company.

I'm marking this thread and coming back to it when the series is complete. Looks like it's going to be fascinating, but there's not much to discuss yet.

Yeah. IDT got me to switch over doing this. Then there was a guy who came by on friday just to make sure that we'd switched.


Kinda creeps me out, but the thought was, "why do I care who my supplier is?"

Totally believable. IDT took over the late, lamented GEnie and charged all members' charge cards some whacking great fee they made up, to bulk up their cash position (if it wasn't outright fraud it was damned close). Yes, it's the same IDT. Bastards, I have seen that logo here and there and it still rankles.
