Cool stuff. Great designs. However, I have this funny feeling that their definition of "affordable" is not one I am familiar with. Just a hunch.

I'm really surprised that there isn't more mention these days about earth-sheltered homes. My ultimate goal is to build one for retirement. My understanding is that it's a rather reasonable cost, and climate-control is essentially taken care of. Plus it's like living in Hobbiton!

Mortimer, I think rammed earth construction has taken over the niche that earth-sheltered used to occupy.

I agree with you in part, BrotherCaine, but I still like the earth-sheltered idea a lot more. And living in Ohio, I think the R-value of a hill of earth would pay off over freestanding rammed-earth. Both in Summer and Winter. I have no evidence to back that up, so you know.
