White Stripes haters to arrive in 10, 9, ... posted by caddis at 9:41 PM on June 7, 2007
Well, the thing is the White Stripes video was original and this one is derivative. Or at least the White Stripes video was novel to me. So even if it was better technically Fell in Love With a Girl is still more impressive.
But even side by side, I think Fell In Love is actually a better video. The Fuyija Miyagi video just seems cool now because it's new and thus more interesting.
Plus how lame is it that they sing their own band name? Seems kind of desperate. posted by delmoi at 9:42 PM on June 7, 2007
I liked Fujiya & Miyagi better when they were called Can, but I can't say I liked the White Stripes better when they were called the Black Crowes. posted by item at 9:44 PM on June 7, 2007 [2 favorites]
Huh, the white stripes video was directed by Michel Gondry posted by delmoi at 9:45 PM on June 7, 2007
Huh. I thought the White Stripes used to be called Violent Femmes. posted by eyeballkid at 9:46 PM on June 7, 2007 [1 favorite]
The power drums in that song are awesome. posted by Ironmouth at 9:57 PM on June 7, 2007

And how lame is it that these two British dudes try to trick everybody into thinking they're Japanese. posted by BaxterG4 at 9:59 PM on June 7, 2007
maybe it's less of a band name and more of a mantra. not a horrible tune, anyway, and the video is absurdly well done. A+++ would download the .mov again posted by runehog at 10:03 PM on June 7, 2007
item, your comment doesn't make any sense at all. The White Stripes & The Black Crowes similarities stop at the fact that they both make recorded music using guitars & drums. That's not to say I'm a fan of either band, just... practice your snark a little better. posted by jonson at 10:04 PM on June 7, 2007
jonson, you're right: the White Stripes are definitely not anything like Fujiya & Miyagi but more like mid-period Fad Gadget. posted by item at 10:10 PM on June 7, 2007
Gondry is a fucking beautiful genius. If you haven't seen his Directors Series DVD, you haven't lived. posted by mullingitover at 10:11 PM on June 7, 2007
...and I've always thought that old Black Crowes sound too much like SST-era Negativland for their own good. posted by item at 10:12 PM on June 7, 2007
I'm with delmoi. I've never seen this video or heard of this band before, but kind of a rip-off.
Also, my understanding of this process is limited, but most of the credit goes to the idea and the filming, right? It seems like it would be pretty easy to divide each still into color planes and assign each color a specific die, no? posted by invitapriore at 10:15 PM on June 7, 2007
I must be totally insane because I like both. posted by _sirmissalot_ at 10:36 PM on June 7, 2007
i've tried liking white stripes, some good songs. but, bass is essential to "rock and roll", it just sounds hollow without it. posted by andywolf at 10:46 PM on June 7, 2007
Even if derivative I still enjoyed it. posted by O9scar at 10:56 PM on June 7, 2007
Seems like I could do "Ankle Injuries" with a few scans of dice and a filter and some boring-ass footage. "Fell in Love With a Girl" is actually some fuckin' art. Yep. posted by fleacircus at 11:01 PM on June 7, 2007

Boy, you're gonna HATE going through a Bo Diddley collection. posted by bunglin jones at 11:06 PM on June 7, 2007
Fujiya and Miyagi's album is pretty good if you like krautrock. The White Stripes are just, er, not that good. I agree with what someone said upthread that the bassless rock music just sounds kind of hollow.
ummm...f&m's vid is obviously done on a computer...it's too clean...you can see a bunch of flaws in the white stripes one because its done by hand...much harder to do...m. gondry is such a badass
of course they are both working from video frames as source material...but theres no way anybody placed all those dice by hand on today's video budget...
that said, i like them both, actually... posted by sexyrobot at 1:11 AM on June 8, 2007
I think they're both pretty good videos. Gondry's handmade-ness and originality wins extra points, of course, but seeing either of them on telly on a Saturday morning would be nice. posted by bunglin jones at 2:13 AM on June 8, 2007

You can try and find a copy of Redd Blood Cells, if you are curious what that might sound like.
(from the link)
"In the summer of 2002, Steven (from Redd Kross) came up with the idea to do an art experiment by adding bass tracks to 2 White Stripes songs and sharing them with Redd Kross fans via the internet. The overwhelmingly positive response inspired him to cover the entire "White Blood Cells" record. Word spread quickly over the internet and soon press such as Entertainment Weekly, Pitchfork Media, the NY Times, BB Gun to name but a few ran articles about "Redd Blood Cells." Fujiya & Miyagi's album kicks so much ass, so they win. Never been a huge fan of the White Stripes but both videos are neat. posted by yeti at 8:56 AM on June 8, 2007

I always enjoyed how 'full' the Black Keys managed to sound, even without a bass.
As for the videos linked, I really liked how the added dimension of the domino pips allowed for more clarity (especially on close shots). posted by carsonb at 10:17 AM on June 8, 2007
Ack, those are dice not dominoes. posted by carsonb at 10:18 AM on June 8, 2007
The Cramps never sounded "hollow" without a bass, to my ears anyway.
Anyway, the dice video is cool, even if it's computer assisted. Can't say I'll watch it twice or buy the album. posted by acetonic at 3:06 PM on June 8, 2007
