Who was it who said that same-sex marriage should be legalised so they should have to go through all the same hassles as the hetero population? During the glory days of Massachusetts weddings I certainly remember one lesbian couple bemoaning the new-found family pressure. Conservative great-aunts suddenly nagging them to go down the aisle. It's pretty clear that we're going to look back on gay marriage like we do on suffrage: kids often can't believe women used not to have the vote.

Yay! We got married in Vancouver, BC, at a bookstore owned by some friends (my partner and I are both former bookstore workers, though not at that bookstore). The store was open during the ceremony, and random customers wandered over to watch, and stayed to give congratulations. It was wonderful. Thanks for the post.

I'm glad that lots of people -- not just Julie, Amanda and those present at City Hall that rainy afternoon -- are getting warm fuzzies from this story! I was especially touched by the comment from "Dave", who is Amanda's dad. I keep getting requests for an MP3 version of my rendition of Praise You. I'm going to have to set aside some time in a quiet room and record it. In the meantime, I would suggest that all of you find your "accordion" -- that thing that makes you try out life's little detours -- and use it to practice your own random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty. I'm not sure how to say this, but I'll try anyway: I'm a dyke. I'm young and urban and lucky enough that I haven't experienced too much overt homophobia, at least not since high school, but even so, homophobia is still a part of my life every day. If you're not queer, it may be hard to relate. But almost every day I have some experience where I have to think about being queer, and think about what the people around me are thinking about it. Little things, like coworkers being too awkward to ask me about my family life, or bigger things, like having to write 'single' on my tax forms. This post was a sweet reassurance that there are people out there who feel OK about that part of me. But even better was reading all of your comments in this thread. I'll go out on a limb here and guess that most of you commenting are straight. But even if you're straight, you're still smiling or even tearing up reading this cute little story of two women getting married, and strangers helping them to do it. If you guys all think that gay marriage is so darn sweet, well, the whole world just seems a little sweeter (and a little safer) for people like me.

Did they misunderestimate the degree to which their families would be uncategorically accepting and cool about this wedding? I suspect they do. But, for whatever reason, society doesn't seem to judge homosexual females as harshly as males (there's lots of theories about that), and some of the traditional issues such as raising children are easier obstacles for them to clear. Regardless, it is refreshing to see that kind of acceptance. I think a previous poster was right in that, in the future, people are going to look back and not understand what all the fuss was about.

I was disturbed that the panhandler at the beginning ducks into Burger King at King and Dufferin when he could have ducked into ISLAND FOODS right next door. So the beginning made me sad. But the rest- great stuff. My partner and I married August 8 2003 in Ottawa and we had to get an officiant (we did not realise this until day before we departed home in Calgary and really had to scramble- we settled on a Humanist); we thought we'd be able to get married at "City Hall" there a la in Toronto, but nope, we only got our licence at City Hall. The wedding we had to set up ourselves, so we did it at the home of friends in the Glebe. Only one gay person was in attendance (among a "party" of about a dozen), so yeah, there are cool straight folks out there for sure, from our friends present to the officiant to the jewelry designer in Calgary who did our rings (and who's now thrilled that same-sex couples can be married EVERYWHERE in Canada, not only Ontario as was the case back then).

I am one of those ridiculously happy ladies- and thank you all so much for finding our story and sharing it. We are every bit as happy and a thousand times moreso than even Joey's account let's on... Craigslist rocks- and we were both so privileged to have met the blog author, his wife, and our two other awesome witnesses last Friday. We had a blast, rocked out to the accordian (never in a hundred thousand lifetimes thought I'd utter that) and couldn't believe what great luck we have. To the above poster who commented... Until the wedding- in fact- until Joey's blog, I had no idea how my father felt positively or negatively. It was as much of a surprise to me as it was to you! But 1/2 of both of our families still dissent, and there is that to work through. Fortunately, good people on Craigslist and around the internet give me hope- and as another commented mentioned above, the whole weekend was full of days where, "Today, I do not hate the world. This is a major accomplishment." Julie and I will be riding our high off this for a long time to come. thanks so much again, everyone! Reading the comments in threads like this gives me hope. Maybe there's a critical mass of tolerant people out there after all. Most days I get more evidence to the contrary, and my hope gets eroded, but then there are moments like this when I get a glimpse of what the world can be like, and I remember what it is we really fight for. The future where everyone's first comment is what a nice couple the brides are. Some of that future is here already, and I tend to forget that and underappreciate it because I've mostly lived in areas where intolerance is the typical and loudest reaction. It tends to drown out responses like these. I'm still a little in awe of places where it's otherwise, like here. So yes, this made me smile.

Having read the story and this thread, I am convinced there is some part of my emotional reaction machinery that is broken. I mean, don't get my wrong, as the grandson and brother of two proud lesbians I must say I love gay people tremendously. I just..I don't know. This was a happy story, and I am happy for them, but it seems like so many people are "tearing up" or sobbing over this and I just don't have that response. /derail Congratulations, I'm very happy for you both.

(actually, i'm kinda with lazaruslong. it wasn't until serazin's heavily-favourited comment that i even consciously noticed that the couple were lesbians. for me it was just a cute story about a couple getting married with accompanying accordion music from an intarwebs stranger. lesbonic love is routine for you, not a novelty could sum it up. i actually live with a lesbian couple in about the gayest suburb of one of the gay meccas of the world, so dykes are just part of the furniture around here)
