I thought it was amazing how the dog suddenly froze on the spot half way through. Then I realized YouTube was still streaming the video.

Incidentally, that's 39 minutes of my life that MetaFilter has taken from me with videos like this. I'm keeping count, you know. And I'll expect that time back one day.

Dachshunds are my favorite. There is little one of them could do to make me not like them and I was bitten on the face by our family dachshund when I was six. He gave me my three favorite scars (one of which creates a cute dimple when I smile).

Weird (dash-dund that is). I've always heard the latter, "docks-hund," but just recently I heard someone refer to them as "dutch hounds."

dash-dund

I've heard that before, but it's wrong (if anyone cares). It's a German word, so to rely on convention somewhat, the English approximation of the chs contstruction is "x" or how you have it (DOCKS-und).

It's similar to when people erroneously pronounce "bruschetta", as though it were German (broo-SHETT-uh). In Italian, the sch is pronounced like the sch in school (to Americans), hence broo-SKET-ta.

How do English-speaking mefites pronounce dachshund?

Docks-(i/u/e)nd. Not sure what that sound is, actually - it seems to be (for me, at least) somewhere between "i" as in "sin," "u" as in "underwear," or "e" as in "end." Though not quite any of those.

There was an old skit—I think it was on Saturday Night Live—about this couple at a restaurant, deciding what to order, and they got into this increasingly intense argument about how to pronounce "bruschetta." The punchline was when the waiter came up to take their appetizer order, and they ordered "the little bread pieces with chopped tomatoes," and the waiter responded with, "Oh, you mean burrrsketty?"

Not that funny, really, but it's stuck in my mind for years.

Oh, I wish my mom was still around to see this, she always loved her dachshunds. That little guy running around in circles should remind us of the indomitable nature of the weinerdog, if they were just a little bigger they would rule us.

I praised that dog's time-keeping skills just a few comments ago, but on 2nd listening I have to say his tempo wobbles a bit here and there. But hey, so does Ziggy Modelite's, and he's one of the greatest drummers the world has ever seen, so what the heck! Go dog!

How do English-speaking mefites pronounce dachshund? It seems like people usually say something like dash-dund, but my German-speaking brain really wants me to so docks-hund.

I'd normally say Dash-hund, but dockshund is probably more correct. Although, I was watching QI last night and Stephen Fry says that in German the dogs are actually called Dockels. Or something like that, I may have the spelling wrong.
