A new JD Salinger Book! Just caught this on Amazon the other day. I haven't really heard anything about it, but it's worth a pre-order at the least. Here's some other information I've found. Along with the supposed introduction to the book...

I will write for us both, I believe, as Buddy is engaged elsewhere for an indefinite period of time. Surely sixty to eighty per cent of the time, to my eternal amusement and sorrow, that magnificent, elusive, comical lad is engaged elsewhere! As you must know in your hearts and bowels, we miss you all like sheer hell. Unfortunately, I am far from above hoping the case is vice versa.

alas, salinger was going to publish these a few years back, then when the time came, he backed off. the story (hapworth 16, 1924) was originally published in the new yorker. he later said that the magazine printing was the "official publication" of the story and that it would not see light of day as a book on its own. If they do publish it, it might be worth getting to flush out your collection.

When I went to a university library to read the story in the magazine, I was upset to find it had been clipped! you could always order this story (as well as his other magazine stories) from an interlibrary loan (they will xerox the story for you and mail it).

Salinger's been delaying the book form of Hapworth for years now. I have a theory that it won't be released until Salinger passes away.

I also had trouble finding the story in my university's library... turns out quite a few people have clipped it from the archives...

I came across Hapworth once, years ago, on microfilm at the NYU (it must have been) Library. I had never heard of it at the time, and finding it was then one of the coolest moments of my life (sad, huh?). After reading it, however, I recall feeling a bit let down--it just wasn't that good. Still, it's probably a lot better than the latest John Grisham.

I was hoping it would be a new book, with a title along the lines of "To The World From Me: Fuck You -- Leave Me Alone!"

(Just kidding. Hope I didn't offend any Salinger fans. If I did, well, you're a phony.)

I read Hapworth while I was in college. I visitted the NYPL for the specific purpose to copy it off microfilm... and I really liked it. I don't actually see it as a story though. More of the missing link for the Glass family saga. It clarifies the underlying themes in Salinger's writings. And to be honest, I'm not surprised if he doesn't publish it. As soon as the news came out, the New York Times reviewed the story and totally slammed it. Before the book was even released! I mean, give me a break! Its been like that his whole career. And everyone wonders why he stopped publishing.
