Newsfilter: Rapidly spreading web photo-posting phenomenon centers on felines with poor spelling. They go mostly by the name lolcats — combining the Web abbreviation for "laugh out loud" (LOL) and "cats." The captions are written with bad grammar

The quoted excerpt alone is 10x funnier than the lolcats themselves.

If you think lolcats are funny you should be sure to check out all the REST of the amusing and tasteful images created by the fine users of 4chan!

This is a great example of how memes, culture jamming, and mashups work, especially how it relates to the real world.

Now, when we start seeing LOLCAT lunch boxes, t-shirts, and TV series, then we'll know we've gone too far.

Well, once it starts showing up in traditional media, that's usually the first beat of the death drum for any meme, so this is really cause for celebration. The final nail will be when the Wall Street Journal reports on it.

I like to think I'm as geeky, if not geekier, than the next guy, but the LOLCATS thing is something that has totally, and completely, escaped my grasp.

It's a mildly amusing concept that has exponentially decreasing rate of return as you look at more of them.

The first 2 or 3 were cute, and induced a smirk. The next 20 made no reaction. The next 50 made me annoyed.

In general I'm a huge fan of what the kids call "macros" even though they are nothing like a macro, but this LOLCATS thing is just too narrow. It was worn out by the time it spread.

I thought ceiling cat was funnier than LOLCATS. And ceiling cat was fucking stupid.

You know what bothers me even more? LOLCATS has become so common that Google Toolbar's spell check doesn't even tag it as misspelled.

And here I was just recently pondering making a MeTa post to say "Thanks so much for making the img tag go away, it's been so nice." So nice.

It won't be a moment too soon when lolcats dies its death. It's escaped me how such a celebration of dumb writing and pseudo l33t-speak can have become a fad. The guise that a cat said it just doesn't compute.

The Intelligence Group, which monitors the Web for things that appeal to Gen X, Gen Y and tweens, recently identified lolcats as a hot online trend.

Good thing we've got capable people monitoring this internet place to let us all know what's going on with Gen X, Gen Y and tweens these days. I think I might like working at The Intelligence Group. 4chan and Fark all day long?

That spawned funny follow-up photos with burger kitty, and, well, here we are today.

Crap on a pancake, what horrible copy. Is the Minneapolis Star-Tribune a real newspaper?

Ah, derision. My truest friend and oldest ally.

I am a simple man, but I still find LOLCATS to be fairly amusing. They're also a nice little thing to email to one's girlfriend when one sees a particularly cute or clever one.

But see, it's also commentary on current events! Especially if they can be linked with cats in any way.

I understand people being tired of it, but it's always kind of fascinating to see just how far a riff can be taken, and how it evolves. Right now lolpresidents and lolTrek are my two favorite versions....where else am I going to see a William Henry Harrison joke?

I fully expect to see a portentous, wondering, look-what-we've-discovered NYTimes article on this 18 months from now.

Once upond a time, I created a cat photography community to try and stem the tide of cat photos being posted to the various 'serious' photo comms I read.

Little did I know that the tide would soon become a tidal wave of feline imagery.

God help us all.
