I've been debating posting this for a couple of days now for a couple of reasons. I feel a little weird, since Meg's a high-profilie member of the MeFi community, and she's obviously going through some very personal stuff, and opening a thread will probably start all sorts of awkward speculation. But then, she is a high-profile member of the MeFi community. Is this news? Is it our business?

I think the whole point of source comments is that they're meant to be hidden - posting a thread about it sort of defeats the point.

> Is this news? Is it our business?

Neither. It's not even interesting. I like Megnut, but this is just not very noteworthy, and it's definitely not clever or innovative, people have been doing similar things for years on the web.I've seen whole journals hidden this way. I guess when people find something hidden their first impulse is always to show someone it.

To be perfectly honest, when I posted the link, I was unaware of the comments that meg had made since Friday. I must have been looking at a cached copy, because my understanding was that all she had there was "I just don't have anything good to say anymore. So I'm not going to say anything at all."

This thread wasn't supposed to be about a "source log", but about (what appeared to be at the time) Meg throwing her hands up and "quitting".

i've always thought that posting source commentary or "nudge, nudge view the source" kind of stuff is tacky and i've never understood why people do it. then again, i've never understood why the bay city rollers were such hit, what with those hairdos and all, so i guess there are some questions that can't be answered.

Hm... I don't have a problem with it.

sometimes you want to keep a journal private. most personal journals are that way. many became public after quite some time, other made their reappearances after long hiatus.

sometimes you want to say things just for the heck of it even, even if you don't want them to be public.

meg does not need to redesign if she wants to make her posts publicly available (though I bet she mocks quite a lot on her public with the source log, especially the public that shoots pics at her in the park...), but to be happy about what she's saying. and i bet that if/when megnut reopens, it'll be a lot more interesting than the source log.

then again, i don't think it's anyone business but hers.

Maybe not Matt, but Meg has been sharing her life with us for years. I'm not a fan of invading anyone's personal space, but I only posted what she herself had made available to the public. If Meg had simply stopped updating the site, and left a public note as to why, she would have invited less scrutiny than she has by handling it this way.

I said from the start that I wasn't sure I should have posted it, and I think now that I probably shouldn't have. But I think there are some valid issues here: private v. public "blogged" life, Pyra's troubles reflected in the blogs it helped produce, the "A-List" (I hate that term) as micro-media icons.

Maybe MeFi isn't the best place for the discussion, as some among us are too close to the situation, but I still think it's worthy of discussion somewhere.

If Meg is about to call it quits, I, for one, will miss her.

crap. what i was trying to say - and said very badly - that linking or writing about someone else who has comments and saying "view their source" or "i found blah blah blah" in x's code is tacky. commented text is not in itself tacky. too early. not enought diet coke.

i'm an avid source reader, and used to have source comments on every page...it is sort of spooky sometimes to find some old webpage from 1996 with source comments i made while making it...listening to such and such band, going to see so-and-so whom i am madly in love with...etc...

its like opening a crypt sometimes.

All right, I'm going to respond to this, only because the speculation is too sillly to ignore.

Here's what happened (and I'm sure this will take all the fun out of this and then we can move on): I took the site down for a variety of reasons. If I wanted you to know why, I would have told you. I'm not ready to put the site back up yet, for a variety of reasons. If I want you to know why, I'll tell you.

In the meantime, I discovered I still had things I wanted to say, so I posted them in the source. For fun. Because it's silly. Not because I'm trying to be clever, original, cute, smart, or any thing else people are assuming.

I did it because I felt like it. And that's it.

Here is a sample
MEGNUT
When she was a youg girl,
She never thought she'd see,
people checking source code
sent by FTP

I hate me too.

Next trend: putting your comments in someone else's source.
