Metafilter and the Purple Crayon

Crayon Physics, the delightful latest game from independent game developer Petri Purho at Kloonigames, a sort of finnish Ferry Halim. Draw objects with your crayon to get the ball to the star. The site is also home to other made-in-a-week games such as Cacodemon, which is as frustrating as it is addictive. If Crayon Physics seems too short, check out the small level pack or hack the xml to make your own. Windows only, works in Wine too

That's fun. Just the right length pretty much.

When I was a little kid, eight or so years old, when all we had to do on cold winter days was play with legos and crayons and wooden blocks with letters on them, when "computers" were punchcard-fed, hulking masses of metal and tubes and the Arpanet was still a gleam in the US military's eye, I'd lay awake in the soft dying light as I was falling asleep in the evening, dreaming of something very much like the computer I'm sitting in front of now, and something very much like the World Wide Web that its attached to.

And this game is what I was doing with it.

Thanks.

crap, how do you do the level where the boxes just keep falling away? Lvl 3 I guess. Maybe 4.

Also, it ends way too soon (although considering I need to get to work, it's probably for the best).

Okay, what's the deal with being able to arbitrary shapes like 1/30 of the time, and only boxes the rest of the time randomly? It's really annoying.

I have the sneaking suspicion the way i am solving some of these are not at all the "right" way.

delmoi: I wondered the same thing. I actually made an arc once but couldn't ever again.

GuyZero: Here's one solution.

Huh. I downloaded, but the file is apparently corrupted.

The cool thing is that there isn't really any 'one way' to do it. My solution for that level was to draw a long flat block from the level with the ball to projecting to the right of the screen, then, as the block fell it end up right up on the star platform.

Thank you so much, this is a wonderful little game!

Well bah humbug to you too Motty.

I enjoyed the game, and wish it came with more levels. I also wish I could make triangles. It wouldn't lemme.

I also wish it'd let you draw other stuff and it'd render. Like making a small airplane or draw a bird or little stick figures. Or a robot. Or a helicopter. It'd be cool if someone could come up with a game where you'd draw something with your mouse and the game would intuitively know how to make whatever it is you drew. Guess it'd take more than seven days to make that game tho.

I did the Slimy Pete game too which is tricky but once you get the hang of it pretty fun.

Oh man, I played the original and the level pack. Man, that's fun. The comments by Petri Purho reveal that there's going to be a level editor! That'll be awesome.

For those wanting a level editor: it's out now
For a "butt-ugly prototype", this is great stuff.

I can't figure out how to get levels to show. I download them and put the files where it looks like they go but when I pull up the game it still shows the same seven levels. what am i doin' wrong? =(
