She became a mini internet celebrity in The Landlord. Now, she's back in her final performance as the hard hitting bad cop who always gets her confession. Enjoy baby retirement, Pearl.

Did Will retire from comedy too?

I'm in the "Will Ferrel is a comedy legend" camp. He makes me laugh consistently.
posted by Mach3avelli at 11:54 AM on July 1, 2007

I thought it was cute. I can see parents not wanting to get their kids into show-biz but I don't think doing home-made videos with your parents and their friends would be too problematic.
posted by delmoi at 11:57 AM on July 1, 2007

Huh. I actually thought this one was sorta funnier than "The Landlord."

So I guess I'm not the only one who can barely muster a "meh" for these videos. I like Will Ferrell, small children, and funny things on the internet but I barely cracked a smile waching this one and The Landlord.

You can tell they're just doing these for fun, that's half of what makes them great. Love the no budget production, for the love of the funny. Reminds me of doing the same in high school/college.

landlord was hilarious... this one, less so.

What Starman said. Like when the women's Olympic snowboading team sneaked through the barricades to catch a few runs while they were waiting for the Olympics to start.

Comedy Legend? Christ, the guy's good for a laugh every now and then but if he's a legend then Brittney Spears is a musical genius.

I want to set Will Ferrell on fire, douse him in vinegar, and feed him to a houseful of starving cats.

Die, Will Ferrell, die!

You know what sucks worse than a Will Ferrel video? Hitler. And your comments. Your comments are all less funny and less creative. Sure I'll give you points for trying. So the best among you get 3 the rest get 2. Out of 1 million. That is not a passing grade. Not even close. Okay, maybe it is the best grade you have ever gotten. Show your parents so they can stick it on the fridge. Be proud. You've accomplished a smidgen more than nothing at all. That's something.

So people who think Will Farrel are funny are trolls? I think you may be mis-using that word.

It's much more entertaining if you turn the sound off and pretend you're watching an E! True Hollywood special about Will Ferrell.

People who disagree with me are trolls. It's impossible, impossible that anyone would, after honest consideration, disagree with me.

You high & mighty haters can high five eachother all you like. I'm sorry, but I can't join you as I will always love the cowbell sketch. Perhaps because I've got a fever.

That is all.

If you must know, this was intended as more of an update on Pearl, rather than to start a discourse consisting of "durr will ferrell is teh sux durr".

More cowbell!
posted by sephira at 2:05 PM on July 1, 2007

I liked it. Pearl is cute and precocious. It was several minutes too long, yes. And I've no desire to see another. But an amusing bit of fun.

Maybe it helps that I successfully ignored Will nearly completely.

Meh. I like cute kids and all, but both this one and the original just leave me cold. No funny here. At least not for me.

I used to have it in for Will Ferrell, but then I watched "Tallegada Nights" and laughed my behind off. Now, I understand. I found the videos hilarious.

The cowbell sketch works cuz Christopher Walken is in it.

[several paragraphs of questioning Will Ferrell's comedian status as well as his humanity, fertility, and usage of precious oxygen on this planet removed for purposes of space and clarity]

I'm not much of a Ferrell fan. There's many other funny people on the Internet who are much funnier. Awkward Pictures for example. Or the people behind the Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show. Or pretty much anyone with a pulse.

Don't stop guys, we're just getting ramped up into a full blown hissy fit concerning a low budget short comedy! Jesus.

Another in the "not at all funny, even for a second, can I have my two minutes back" camp for both of them.
posted by lupus_yonderboy at 3:29 PM on July 1, 2007

I thought the first one was good. I think this one would be good if it was the first one. The thing that I try and remember is that almost know videos on the internet are going to be funny. Practically none are, and most of the ones that are funny are America's funniest home videos sort of funny, not well crafted comedy.

So well it is not so funny it is more than funny enough. Also even though I think Farrell centric movies have been wildly uneven. I have to give credit for the absolute perfection of the names of the characters, Ron Burgundy is the perfect name for a 70s anchor man, and Ricky Bobby is the perfect name for a nascar super star. Think of an occupation and try and come up with a name for the person who does it that is half as perfect and half as hilarious as those names, I'm not sure that it can be done.

For those who are interested, Melissa Green wrote the song played at the end. She sounds a lot like Laurie Berkner.

"Melissa Green... she sounds a lot like Laurie Berkner."

Yes and Angus MacGillicutty sounds an awful lot like the song stylings of The Band That Dare Not Speak It's Name.

I think you'll find those two ladies' names don't sound anything alike. Meh-lih-sah-green. Lah-ree-burrk-nur. ...nope. Nothing alike.

However, if you hold your mouth just right, "The Empire State Building" can sound a little bit like "Chicago Transit Authority."

I'm very happy that the tike finally gets to "retire". I'm not a huge Ferrell fan but these were cute. ONLY because the kids learned her lines pretty damn well. It's also pretty cool that Will has enough sense of humor to just fuck around for the helluvit.

I saw this one a few days ago and thought about posting it, but decided it just wasn't that funny.

Disclaimer: I also think Will Ferrell can be absolutely hilarious at times.

This is not a thing you can do twice and still get laughs.

First one: Some comedy guys making a home video, with the funny toddler.

Second one: Like most SNL skits since about 1981. Looooonnnngg and not very amusing.

I like some Will Ferrell, too, and the "Landlord" thing was fun. MESSAGE TO WILL FERRELL: Just make up this shit spur of the moment, no actors, no script, no security cams or whatever. And Pearl is fucking FINISHED, DONE.
posted by kenlayne at 10:19 PM on July 1, 2007

I don't think Ferrell has an account in MeFi so messages to him in here probably won't reach him, but crazier things have happened.

Isn't there something... I dunno... inherently wrong with the idea of Will Ferrell using his own kid to get laughs like this? I guess it's a way to play with this kid while still working but... I dunno... Just seems kinda... I don't have kids so I ain't no authority on what's good for them. Still.. Makes ya wonder.

The outtakes are funnier than the original piece, but sometimes you gotta just let the kid go be a kid.

Outtakes?
posted by five fresh fish at 10:36 AM on July 2, 2007

So the other day, I'm teaching my 22-month-old daughter to throw her arms up in the air and say "Tah dah!" and it isn't working. She sort of does it, but only halfheartedly at best, and so I give up and start making lunch.

A few days later, I notice she's not underfoot, so I go looking for her. And there she is, standing in the bathroom by the portable potty. The lid is open, and she's standing there with a wet clump of toilet paper in her hands, calmly wringing the pee out of it into a little puddle on the floor in front of her.

I take this all in, then demand "Molly? What are you doing?"

She looks up, smiles, gives the toilet paper one last twist into two pieces, throws her arms up in the air and shouts "Tah dah!"

THAT is funny. This video, not really.

I will admit that it is a mildly impressive display of post production editing, attempting to cut the footage of this kid saying the lines as if she were a serious actor. The outtakes sound more like parents at public functions trying to prompt their children into doing whatever they think is cute in that given moment. Like kids are marionettes and your voice is the string, but it only seems to work half of the time, if you're lucky. It's a novelty, but they're smart to quit now after only two 'performances.'

And DaveJay is right. That sounds funnier. Too bad you didn't get it on video.
posted by ZachsMind at 5:42 PM on July 6, 2007

oh god davejay, you saved the crappiest day I've had in years (no pun intended). I feel much better now. Don't need a video. That is the funniest too-cute toddler story I have ever heard. Thank you.

(full confession- I liked Pearl too)
