abandoned places

Jim documented his recent trip to Louisiana, including a number of photos of places abandoned after Katrina.

Some worth checking: Amoco, post office, middle school, boats, homes.

and some rebirth.

That last picture (rebirth) looks like a movie set, what with the old car and facade-eque house.

According to the photographer, the last house is a souped-up FEMA trailer.

These places aren't abandoned. They're most likely waiting for promised Federal funds. Two years later. Two years. Well, it's not like the President promised, or anything.

When do the impeachment hearings start again?

I hope I don't sound too defensive here, but I'd like to point out that aside from the touristy shots at the beginning, a lot of these weren't taken anywhere near the city of New Orleans.

I know the post didn't say anything about New Orleans, but just glancing at the pictures one might think that New Orleanians are routinely driving past washed-up fishing boats and abandoned post offices. But, in fact, Venice--home of the aforementioned PO--is at least 75 miles southeast of here. Even the pictures that actually are inside the city limits are very far away from the center of the city...the Now Leasing picture jourman2 linked to is in New Orleans East, right near where I grew up but about fifteen miles away from what most people consider New Orleans proper. It's, uh, like Staten Island as opposed to Manhattan, I guess.

Let me be clear: I'm not saying that everything is right back to normal in New Orleans, or that it's not a goddamn crying shame what happened (and is still happening) in Venice, New Orleans East, or anywhere else in the Gulf Coast. All I want to do is clarify that, since most of you don't know a lot about the specific geography of the area, that this isn't what most of New Orleans looks like these days.
