This is the first time I've heard the original, and I gots to say that the K&D remixes are far better. This despite the fact that I was a big fan of the DJ Food track that the bassline on the original was ripped from, and I generally approve of that kind of reappropriation. The K&D Sessions? One of the best albums ever, at least in the "throw something on when people are over for drinks" category.

However, the track "Bomberclaad Joint" confuses me greatly, because it is a song about sanitary towels. That is confusing to me.

I've been listening to that K&D Sessions album for years and this is one of the tracks that always makes me look up even after hearing it 1000x times. Dark Lady is great as well.

Kruder & Dorfmeister's Sessions is a choice mix, it has aged beautifully. It is chilled and laid back enough to play for after dinner drinks. A "Kind of Blue" for Generation X, trendy without offending the mainstream guests. Unfortunately K&D haven't done anything as exciting, I wish they'd get back together. Their solo works are good (Tosca, Peace Orchestra), but a little too bass heavy. That's not exactly true, Peace Orchestra is more of a "shrooming with a hippie in the forest" and while Tosca remains in the "upmarket suburban club" category. I guess I can't blame them, I have a feeling that when Kruder made "Honey" he had in mind seductively dancing underweight European dancers than the one-too-many just-got-out-of-college sorority girls awkwardly trying to find the beat.

a little too bass heavy. Have you listened to Dehli9? It sounds like nothing else in the K&D, G-Stone catalogue. By the time you make it to the minimalist piano on the second CD, it's pretty clear that Dorfmeister and Huber are after something a lot more significant than creating upmarket retail atmospheres.

The Bomb the Bass original is infinitely better than the K+D remix. And I like the K+D remix. nthdegx, the 12" for Bug Powder Dust from '96 you linked to is a bunch of remixes. It was originally released in '94 (still a year after the DJ Food track of course)

I've loved this record since it came out. Got to be the original mix too, not the wussy K&D mix. Justin Warfield's My Field Trip To Planet Nine album is also a killer. He needs to make more records (preferably ones that don't sound like She Wants Revenge)...

The answer to "whose bassline is this?" is "none of the above". The bassline was actually sampled from "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" by Flora Purim (1976.) It's Alphonso Johnson playing the bass.

I had a feeling that DJ Food didn't exactly create the bassline, given their usual methodology (and that of Coldcut and most of the Ninja Tune roster).

Yeah, and back in the halcyon days of the early 90s, it wasn't like they had to be super-careful about sample clearance, credits etc. Those early DJ Food efforts were super-heavy on the sampler, and all the more fun for it.

I like the song, but, echoing asok, a 'welcome-to-my-favorite-memory-from-the-90s' YouTube clip isn't the best of excuses for an FPP. Bomb the Bass's track Winter in July still sounds good today too, and is apt given the weather so far this season. I notice, with alarm, that it has since been covered by the alarmingly alarming Sarah Brightman; why couldn't she have tackled Bug Powder Dust instead?

The best mix is the Funk Mob one (the one my man Sam used to play). Da Funk Mob were awesome. Miles better than most of the crap on Mo' Wax. Plus, "Ravers Suck Our Sound and Get Fuck" is my all time favourite song title.

Da Funk Mob I was trying to remember which version I liked the best but I couldn't remember which trip-hop compilation it was on. Rebirth of Cool Phive has it, took awhile to remember where I had it!
