Get your Gmail IMAPped and tagged

Get your Gmail IMAPped and tagged David Chartier over at Download Squad seems to have found a slightly cumbersome way to get your Gmail'd email IMAPed and tagged. Can any of the MeFi geniuses here think of a better way to have your email tagged and sorted online (via Gmail) *and* offline (via Thunderbird)?

Is this more of an AskMetafilter post? It's a pretty narrow focus for the blue if you're just being semi-rhetorical with your question.

The key to this is it requires an IMAP account. In which case, why not make that the primary email account and forward a copy to the gmail account as a way to keep it in sync. Meanwhile the IMAP client (Thunderbird, etc..) can download from the primary IMAP account as described.
