This is exactly the type of post I'd expect from a sock puppet. And what qwaaboc said.

This is good. I'd always wondered about the story behind this clip and at one point had scoured the net and Nexis trying to figure out what it was.

Can't wait to preserve a screencap from the very last frame of that video, where the lady pulls her hand away from her face and looks like she's about to cry.

that was a well-deserved smack.

Seconded.

"Yeah, our relative may have killed your friends and severely brain damaged your loved one, but hey, she was smoking grass when it happened. Sleeping around, too."

THWACK indeed.
posted by Avenger at 10:25 PM on July 12, 2007

Avenger: It wasn't the family of the guy that caused the accident. That would be an understandable punch in the face. The spat was between the families to two people in the same car.

"Yeah, our relative may have killed your friends and severely brain damaged your loved one, but hey, she was smoking grass when it happened. Sleeping around, too."

I think the woman who got punched in the face was related to Dana Defeo, the lone survivor who ended up with severe brain damage. So it's more like "Yeah, our relative might still be alive, but, uh, yours slept around and smoke up!"

Which makes even less sense.

I think it's more like "This may have been prevented if your relative hadn't been driving stoned." Considering the result of the trial, the punch seems deserved.

Thank you for posting this! I saw this video a long while ago and wondered what was behind it - aside from a worthy whack for shit-talking.

I'd also seen the video and wondered. Now I know, and hearing what was said, I'd have done the same thing.

There are some very scummy people on this earth.

Aw, that's a bummer. Ruins the clip for me to know it's full of death. I originally thought it was something happening in a high school, about kids getting in mild trouble for being stoned or out after curfew.

The thwackee has such an archetypal 'mean mom' haircut, I would have gotten punchy if she were offering me a newly hatched Easter chick. I'm relieved that she deserved it, as it kinda lets me off the hook, class-rage-wise.

That was a good punch.
Their energies would have been better directed to giving the reckless driver the punishment he deserved.

It's just something about that finger-in-the-face action that calls for a clobbering. Jamming that sausage-link digit of hers under that poor girl's nose. I can picture her doing the same when the grocery store refuses her expired coupon.

And so the truth of the Lady Puncher Saga is revealed. For the last 2 years i have watched this clip almost daily and reveled in the lulz it brought. I theorized what cause the event. I ran through conspiracy theory's of a second puncher. Tried to make out what the older women was saying. And now the mystery is solved and even though it has brought a sense of closure it also brings a sadness.

The young girl in the clip seems to be enjoying the ordeal, in a "backstage at Jerry Springer" kind of way. Something is fishy about it.

My only wish is that someone could've taught the puncher how to really throw a punch. She'd had a great set-up, squared off OK, stepped into it and had a decent shoulder snap.

However, her feet are too close together, she makes contact with fingers 3-4-5, doesn't get her weight moving forward along her hips and doesn't really drive through the punch. With a little better focus, we could've had a broken nose and a solid de-cleating with snot bubbles.

A+ for effort
C- for execution

Yeah she did seem obnoxious, did seem out of line....

But punching her in the face just seems ignorant. You think that lady really went home and said to herself "man I just got punched in the face I should be nicer to her." Probably not. Bet you it further escalated the animosity between the two.

Stuff like this always gives me the opposite reaction than laughter. I prefer to get my humor somewhere else than by watching two old women let out their negativities on eachother.

If you can haul off and unexpectedly punch someone full in the face and all that happens is the punchee holds her hand up to her mouth for a second, you need to rethink your whole approach to punch-throwing. I mean, I'm not exactly Hercules but I bet if I got to sucker punch someone in the jaw they'd hit the floor.

Any volunteers to test this theory?
posted by Justinian at 2:13 AM on July 13, 2007

Yeah, my first reaction to "Defeo" was "probably the voices were telling her to do it".

...punching her in the face just seems ignorant.

Agreed--what more likely time to make a 100% rational decision than right after your child has been killed and another person is trying to blame them for being high?

With a little better focus, we could've had a broken nose and a solid de-cleating with snot bubbles.

I watched it twice, and it looked to me like she connected right below the cheekbone. So I'm thinking cracked sinus on the receiving end (nasty), and some significant knuckle bruising on the hitter.

Also: That Snopes link was pretty un-necessary. In fact, this whole thing was pretty un-necessary. Why am I here, again?

I haven't seen this much contact since Buzz Aldrin played Bart Sibrel a little chin music. (I am by no means endorsing any escalations from heated words to actual maxillofacial demolition. I submit this link only as a related and noteworthy take-down. The moral is: Never mess with an astronaut -- they're fit, and they know physics!)

Pffft. You know, as humiliating as that was, it really didn't look damage-inducing. More like a fist-slap than an actual punch. With a punch, I want to see some head-snap action. But not bad for an old lady. And it accomplished what she wanted. That punchee shut the hell up, huh.

Yeah, the Buzz Aldrin punch was much better, and more satisfying. The two women, well, it's such a tragic situation that it makes enjoying the punch difficult once you know the context.

Though I think the puncher's reaction is actually perfectly reasonable--they'd just come from a trial where the man responsible for the death of two young people was convicted, and this other woman is talking shit about her kid--who was a victim, and died as a result. I'd hit her in the fucking face, too.

This punch, though, is guilt-free enjoyable.

This "this is what happens when teens drive drunk/stoned" article says that Defeo was a "rider", not the driver. And the case study says that it was Batson's car.

When you combine that information with the grandma saying "gutter trash" (hard to hear the "g", but I somehow doubt her saying "utter trash") and the punchee saying "Terry had THC", you get an overall "We're better than you, and since you're worse than us, our relative (Defeo) was obviously unwillingly placed into a situation where drugs and adultery may have taken place, which is what your kind of people do, so it can't have been our relative's fault." It's the kind of class rivalry that country music thrives on ("I've got friends in low places", etc.).

For me the best part has always been the military precision with which the daughter of the puncher -- who had provoked things by sticking herself into the women being interviewed, then stepped back for her mom -- swings her head away and follows her mom out the door.

Like it, you know, wasn't the first time ....
