I.R.E.N.E. (Image, Reconstruct, Erase Noise, Etc.), a project led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and in partnership with the Library of Congress, uses digital imaging to capture and preserve audio stored on mechanical media such as LPs and wax cylinders. From the LOC preservation topics page: "Imaging methods are non-invasive and scale naturally to an automated approach. For these reasons they hold promise both as preservation tools and as a basis for mass digitization." [via LOC blog]
