Tim Kreider's editorial cartoons have that sort of vulgarity, puerility, absurdity, topicality, pith, bile, and self-awareness that help me get through the unending despair of reading the news every day. (He also draws great faces.)

I met Tim a few years back when we tabled at a book show together. He's an amazing artist and almost always wears a full suit and tie to events*, which makes him look- and I mean look exactly- like John Edwards. My favorite of his strips remains this one, for which I frequently beg for him to sell as a print every time I see him.

Dude can draw. Even better, I like that his editorial voice fits in the best tradition of the form while being every inch of this era. Love, love, love the detail about the suit and tie. It's a perfect complement to his drawing style. Thanks for the introduction to his stuff, klangklangston!

Tim Kreider rules. Regrettably, though, my favorite of his cartoons doesn't appear to be on his site. It's the one with the figure who is either Captain America (as he claims to be) or Frankenstein's monster dressed up like Captain America (as everyone else is certain he is). "No. NOT Frankenstein. Captain America." I linked to his site in one of my old, old askme answers to a question asking for rhyming sayings like "step on a crack, break your mother's back". Krieder's got one that says "Popcorn before pie, then you die. Pie before popcorn, sit and watch soft porn".

Hired me to copy an image of a cherubic Bacchus from a menu they'd stolen from a café in France. I drew several variations on the basic design, but in the end they hired someone else and refused to pay me anything for my work. The character they finally used, a cartoon of an impish French chef, now mocks me from billboards and print ads. I no longer accept any commercial art jobs."

Tim Kreider is great. I only wish the City Paper would print his strip a little larger. The text is tough to read when it's shrunk down to a quarter page size.
