Ad on the bus reads: "If you don't gave GIO Third Party Property Insurance, we suggest you don't hit this bus"
I know that. The reason I know that is because i've seen that picture before, except when I saw it haddn't been compressed to hell and back rendering it to blurry to even read. posted by delmoi at 12:41 PM on July 19, 2007
mrnutty - right, was just going to say that. posted by NotInTheBox at 1:39 PM on July 19, 2007
"Mr. would you please hump my pony, he's over there behind the tree, take-a few shots in the driveway, I think you'll have fun."
Oh wait....that's Yanni. Yanni makes me think of Weird Al. Weird Al and Ween. THAT I would love to hear. posted by NotInTheBox at 1:44 PM on July 19, 2007
Weird Al and Ween actually have a similar schtick: Weird Al with his parodies of specific songs, and Ween with their "parodies" of music genres. Put the two together, and... head assplodes posted by Brak at 2:22 PM on July 19, 2007

Brak (my other favorite musical artist): Those are called pastiches, and Weird Al does them as well. I always try to determine if any of his songs are Ween pastiche, since he's already done Devo (Dare To Be Stupid) and TMBG (Everything You Know Is Wrong). posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 2:24 PM on July 19, 2007
I am reminded of a Boston.com news story about a woman who was killed when her Nissan Xterra slipped into neutral, rolled down the driveway, and killed her.
Because the story mentioned the brand name of the car at least twice, the banner ads above, beside, and below the story were all advertising the Nissan Xterra. Whoops! posted by Lord Kinbote at 2:28 PM on July 19, 2007
Quelle timing. I'm collecting photos just like these for a presentation on considering the context of ad design.
If anyone has links to any HIGHER-RESOLUTION images such as these, I'd be eternally grateful for links or contacts. Credit duly given, of course. posted by rokusan at 2:29 PM on July 19, 2007
Got any quickie links to oddly spelt words?
Since GoodNews seems to be in the Netherlands, I won't make a churlish snipe about how odd "spelt" looks to New Worlders. :D posted by rokusan at 2:32 PM on July 19, 2007
About 5 years ago I was on the PETA site looking at a video of inhumane treatment at a Seaboard meat packing plant, and the banner at the top had a "Sock The Monkey" ad. posted by zek at 2:33 PM on July 19, 2007
Ah, I should have known there'd be a specific name for that. Thanks! I'm not too familiar with Weird Al, so I wasn't aware that he delves into that concept as well. posted by Brak at 4:00 PM on July 19, 2007

Everything You Know Is Wrong is a parody of a TMBG song? I take it, of Everything Right Is Wrong Again? Strange, I don't see/hear it. posted by JHarris at 4:30 PM on July 19, 2007
Like champthom's, I also like the inadvertent gags that an alert photographer can capture in one image. posted by rob511 at 4:46 PM on July 19, 2007
I just have a vision of the driver of that car, after the shock of seeing the front end of their car disappear under the front of the bus, they are sitting there in a state of trauma induced confusion and they turn to the giant banner on the side in an effort to calm themselves down. And what does the bus say?
"If you don't gave GIO Third Party Property Insurance, we suggest you don't hit this bus"
That is when they realize that the world is openly mocking them. posted by quin at 4:58 PM on July 19, 2007
Everything You Know Is Wrong is a parody of a TMBG song?
I always thought of it not as a parody but an homage. The chord progressions and pattering lyrics might be Giantesque, albeit a bit faster. posted by The Great Big Mulp at 5:08 PM on July 19, 2007
This reminds me of the time I caught part of The Abyss on the SciFi Channel. In the middle of the sunken nuclear sub scene (with all the drowned sailors drifting around) SciFi cut to a recruiting ad for the Navy, featuring Tony Scott-style jittery footage of a submarine and badass looking sailors. I've always wondered if that was random of if there's someone with a subversive streak in the control room. posted by brundlefly at 5:11 PM on July 19, 2007 [1 favorite has favorites]
Everything You Know is Wrong is not a direct take on any onje song, it's just "in they style of They Might be Giants." It has, well, accordion, obviously, but in a very Linnell style, that signature stompy guitar... uh that's what I call it anyway, TMBGesque wordplay and lyric delivery. When he does Dare To Be Stupid, Al even dons Devowear, to underline the connection. I think some of his best songs are the pastiches.
Pastiche is generally genre-oriented, but it's fantastic when it's artist-specific, eh? In the Wikipedia article, you'll note that the term refers both to referential use of pre-existing styles and amalgamations of them. The latter is, of course tres Ween/Beck/TMBG. posted by Ambrosia Voyeur at 5:59 PM on July 19, 2007 [1 favorite has favorites]

Funny stuff (especially Jesus Cat)! But, the banner ads with the news stories are creepy. Do the news sites have people on staff who catch those things and change them? posted by amyms at 8:23 PM on July 19, 2007
There was one a few weeks back with an article breaking the news of the shootings at Virginia Tech, and next to it, that Flash banner insurance ad of the girl dancing in her dorm room and turning around looking shocked. It was supremely tasteless. Alas, it didn't really lend itself well for a screen capture. posted by Down10 at 1:27 AM on July 20, 2007
This was great. It reminded me of a bit Gawker used to do where they'd screenshot particularly egregious CNN headlines that appeared with the words "Watch Now!" next to them. posted by bijou at 9:02 PM on July 20, 2007
