Ad on the bus reads: "If you don't gave GIO Third Party Property Insurance, we suggest you don't hit this bus" I know that. The reason I know that is because i've seen that picture before, except when I saw it haddn't been compressed to hell and back rendering it to blurry to even read.

Brak (my other favorite musical artist): Those are called pastiches, and Weird Al does them as well. I always try to determine if any of his songs are Ween pastiche, since he's already done Devo (Dare To Be Stupid) and TMBG (Everything You Know Is Wrong).

I am reminded of a Boston.com news story about a woman who was killed when her Nissan Xterra slipped into neutral, rolled down the driveway, and killed her. Because the story mentioned the brand name of the car at least twice, the banner ads above, beside, and below the story were all advertising the Nissan Xterra. Whoops!

I just have a vision of the driver of that car, after the shock of seeing the front end of their car disappear under the front of the bus, they are sitting there in a state of trauma induced confusion and they turn to the giant banner on the side in an effort to calm themselves down. And what does the bus say? "If you don't gave GIO Third Party Property Insurance, we suggest you don't hit this bus" That is when they realize that the world is openly mocking them.

Everything You Know Is Wrong is a parody of a TMBG song? I always thought of it not as a parody but an homage. The chord progressions and pattering lyrics might be Giantesque, albeit a bit faster.

This reminds me of the time I caught part of The Abyss on the SciFi Channel. In the middle of the sunken nuclear sub scene (with all the drowned sailors drifting around) SciFi cut to a recruiting ad for the Navy, featuring Tony Scott-style jittery footage of a submarine and badass looking sailors. I've always wondered if that was random of if there's someone with a subversive streak in the control room.

Homage+Parody ~= Pastiche Everything You Know is Wrong is not a direct take on any onje song, it's just "in they style of They Might be Giants." It has, well, accordion, obviously, but in a very Linnell style, that signature stompy guitar... uh that's what I call it anyway, TMBGesque wordplay and lyric delivery. When he does Dare To Be Stupid, Al even dons Devowear, to underline the connection. I think some of his best songs are the pastiches. Pastiche is generally genre-oriented, but it's fantastic when it's artist-specific, eh? In the Wikipedia article, you'll note that the term refers both to referential use of pre-existing styles and amalgamations of them. The latter is, of course tres Ween/Beck/TMBG.

There was one a few weeks back with an article breaking the news of the shootings at Virginia Tech, and next to it, that Flash banner insurance ad of the girl dancing in her dorm room and turning around looking shocked. It was supremely tasteless. Alas, it didn't really lend itself well for a screen capture.
