I try and be pretty cosmopolitan and accepting of the views of others. I understand that there are cultural differences and something that I might find offensive might not even be given a second glance elsewhere... But stoning is just barbaric, and any group or culture that condones it is not as good as cultures that don't. Period. If you belong to a group of people that thinks that it's acceptable to throw rocks at someone till they're dead, then your culture is not as good as mine. Doubly so if you do with without trying them in an impartial court, and triply so if it's for something that the person has already been punished for. You are a violent mob. That is not a good thing.

This is going to turn into a more pathetic retread of the Yezidi stoning thread, meaning people are going to draw equivalences between stoning and the American death penalty, some people will try to distinguish the two while condemning both, and others will just snark. Well, yeah, I mean I don't really see the specific significance of this particular stoning case over any other. I don't even know if it's the actual stoning itself that bothers me. I mean, it's horrible and cruel and really disturbing, but I don't particularly enjoy the thought of hurting / killing anyone. What has always disturbed me about the stonings that make the news is the reason, which is usually adultery (which sometimes refers to widows getting it on), or women being a little too loose for their family's / community's standards. The fact that such small potatoes issues that I think can be solved by a good dysfunctional family yelling match are being "solved" by breaking a person's head open with ROCKS ... well, that's what's disturbing to me. But still, it's nice to see that it's not always the women. That's the only thing that really caught my eye about the article.

Stonings just seem so odd to me. I mean, where do the stones come from? If I were right now to decide to stone the guy outside my window, I would have to spend at least a half-hour collecting stones to be able to do it. Either there are places in this world with a superabundance of stones, or people are carefully planning to stone someone, and assembling their arsenal. And, if that's the case, why get so caveman? Who so primitive? If you're already scheming to kill, isn't there a better way? If you're planning on sending a message, can't you be cleverer? It's like when they crush people under walls as punishment. What -- do they have a wall they are just not using? Or do they build a wall for the express purpose of crushing someone? Seriously, what the fuck?

I'm not thinking that's an improvement. I guess before I just thought that men had nothing to lose by having affairs with women, raping women, etc, all of these situations for which women get stoned. I do think it is an improvement that men have a deterrent as well. I'm certainly not saying it's a good thing.

To Answer your question Astro Zombie: They often have children gather the stones in small piles before hand and back in the day they sold stones... you wanted JUST the right size, you know. So you wouldn't throw your shoulder out. As for the wall thing. Yes they often just build a pile of bricks - barely a wall - and pull it or bulldoze it over on to the sinner.

Astro Zombie, whenever I hear about this sort of thing, it always seems to be broken masonry bricks that are being used. Maybe they are finding old houses/ walls to tear down to get the killing implements. I want to make a joke about using something that is ready and on-hand to do the task, something about how in an office we would stapler someone to death, but honestly I just can't bring myself to try and find anything amusing in this punishment.

According to Amnesty International, "in 2006, 91 per cent of all known executions took place in six countries: China, Iran, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan and the USA...at least 1,010 people were executed in China during the year...Iran executed 177 people, Pakistan 82 and Iraq and Sudan each at least 65. There were 53 executions in 12 states in the USA."

tastybrains: fair enough, but since no one's demonstrating that this is a reversal of previous male immunity we should assume that this deterrent hasn't done much to deter the cases we've seen before. Indeed, I'd guess that this type of case only serves to further demonize women in these communities; now they're not just guilty of being temptresses, but their seduction can get you killed. We should probably enforce even harsher penalties against a woman who would dare display her ankles!

Apparently, it's true that stoning for adultery is not prescribed in the Koran, but there are many references in the Hadith describing Muhammad ordering people to be stoned to death. Now this may not be representative of the "best" interpretation of Islam or the Sharia, but...

Somehow I think my sarcasm didn't translate. While it's true that the Koran doesn't explicitly mention stoning as punishment, sha'ria law in practice comes from many different sources (the Koran but equally so from the hadiths and fatwas proclaimed by Islamic scholars throughout recent history) and this more definitively embodies the reality of what today might be termed Islamic jurisprudence. It is this repugnant, barbaric tradition that endorses the Bronze-age idea of stoning people to death for adultery. Of course if you take the Christian or Hebrew Bibles ~~literally~~ seriously, you'd be obligated to believe all manner of dim draconian nonsense. All the more reason to anesthetize faith in whatever incarnation it reveals itself trudging out into modern life to murder normal people for imagined cosmic injustices.

The legal system in Western countries goes way beyond what it says in the Bible and what some clerics make out of it. It is precisely because we have realized more than 200 years ago (in an era called enlightenment) that the Bible is full of bunk that we have developed our legal traditions and are now lightyears beyond this crap. We honor our priests, but we sure as hell wouldnt want them to be our judges. Sure, even our legal systems are not perfect, but I am glad that we are past stonings, sawing off hands and executing minors for having a drink or holding hands in a park. Those that advocate the rule of Sharia, on the other hand, are stuck in the mentality of camel herders from 500 years ago.
