The jury's still out on the ad campaign for me, but to everyone saying that speeding is done for fun and never as an ego display, I have to disagree strongly. Maybe you've been lucky to live someplace where that behavior isn't common-place, but you are just wrong, wrong, wrong.

Even if speeding were just about 'having fun' some people might have less fun if they were mocked for doing it. Some activities become less fun when it isn't seen as 'cool'. If you don't believe me, I can take you to several housing estates in the UK and Finland where the whole point of speeding is to show off your car, your driving ability and to impress women. I can see speeding for fun or ego display if you have a car that's designed to either go fast or look flashy, but I speed in my busted ass Honda Accord (which is a far cry from a babe magnet) to reduce the overall time it takes me to get a place. If I'm driving ten minutes to the store for groceries, I'm much less likely to speed than if I'm driving five and a half hours to see my girlfriend. For me, driving fast is more about efficiency than showing off. Then again, maybe I'm just in a rush to get there so she can assure me that my small penis is adequate.

You have to come up with other ways of attacking the most vulnerable part of the young male speeder: their ego. And the quickest way to a young man's ego is through the genitals. So to speak. Then again, I find most of the 'let's kill people in brutal and surprising ways to get the point across'-campaigns in the UK make me laugh. Nothing like adverts with a body count...

Tangentially, the motorcycling community's "loud pipes, small dick" campaign has not resulted in any appreciable reduction in the decibel level.

No, admittedly it's not the greatest analogy, but this is to do with targetting majority groups and accurate representation of the entire reality doesn't enter into it. Would this advert work if, for the sake of equality, there was an elderly black woman driving the car? Because there have been accounts of elderly black women electively speeding they should also be represented and spoken to. The majority of this behaviour, as has been stated several times upthread, is down to young men.

I've never in my life seen a female do the things in the ad (burn rubber, do donuts and burnouts, etc.). Sure, I've seen them go faster than the speed limit but never the other stuff. I've seen countless males do it. Hah, not that long ago I was waiting at a light where shortly after the light the road narrowed to one lane. Next to me a rather elderly grandmother type in a Mustang. I figured it would be no problem to beat her to the merge, that is until I heard her tires chirp off the light, and at the gear change and away she went. I just kept thinking "Little Old Lady from Pasadena." It didn't really matter that she was ahead of me as at that speed she was not going to slow me down. Admittedly, the noise making maneuvers are more often performed by those targeted in the ads. However, inattentive moms (and dads) speeding in their SUVs and minivans are probably just as big a danger if not more so.

These are not mutually exclusive categories. People speed and fumble for cigarettes and drink coffee and talk on the phone and adjust the radio all at once. The thing is, those inattentive idiots are much safer to everyone else at 55mph than they are at 80mph. There's no reason to stop regulating all dangerous driver activities (including one of the most dangerous ones) just because you can't regulate some of them.

What pracowity said, plus the types of (invariably young, male) drivers I see every day, that tailgate you one second and blast two lines over and back in pursuit of an opening are far from attentive. They give themselves the opportunity only to anticipate their own actions, and cannot correct in time if granny or someone panics when they see this person coming at them in the rearview. People like these guys create havoc, and I'm glad to let them through, but the whole reason you practice defensive driving is precisely you are sharing the road with people may not be as talented as you* are, and not have your lightning fast reflexes. * And you are probably not that talented at driving.

In the many years since I first got my licence I've seen a much greater proportion of young women driving whilst a male is the passenger. Along with that the antisocial driving behaviour of the young and ~~stupid~~ fearless. I had a pair of young ladies in a 69 Roadrunner 6Pack 'vert pass me and a few others on a double yellow just outside of Lake Louise this weekend. This despite my own adder on the posted limit.
