Disclaimer: As a woman, I feel it's my duty to point out that there is some content (text-based) on the site that could be contrued as misogynistic, but I thought it was all in good fun. I think most dudes and dudettes will be able to take it with a grain of salt and a smile :). posted by amyms at 12:14 AM on July 26, 2007

You accuse the Dude of misogyny, you're entering a world of pain.

Where are you from? "Dude" is universal and timeless... Case in point: All The Young Dudes, Mott The Hoople, 1972. posted by amyms at 12:39 AM on July 26, 2007
I'm pretty sure the modern usage first appeared in Southern California surfer culture in the early 1970's. I know that by the mid 1970's it was a common term with surfers in my san diego beachtown elementary school along with other terms like 'gnarly'
The term itself is older than that of course but it was used in the sense of "a fancy dude" rather than a form of informal address. posted by vacapinta at 12:58 AM on July 26, 2007
amyms, maybe this rings a bell: "Nobody calls me Lebowski. You got the wrong guy. I'm the Dude, man." posted by Pendragon at 1:09 AM on July 26, 2007

Yes, Pendragon, the Dudeism site is unabashed in its worship of all things Lebowski. posted by amyms at 1:16 AM on July 26, 2007

Dude, I *saw* Mott the Hoople perform this song numerous times during their heyday, and I can assure you that anybody in any of those audiences who tried to refer to someone else as 'dude' would be in for an ass-whupping on the grounds of pretentiousness, fronting and affecting an American accent when not singing an American song. posted by PeterMcDermott at 3:37 AM on July 26, 2007
Since there seems to be at least one Big Lebowski reference made daily, I finally rented it this past weekend. Perhaps this could be listed on the registration page as required viewing.
(Fantastic movie btw ... Thanks for the daily ... Ok, weekly reminders) posted by itchylick at 5:19 AM on July 26, 2007

Hey Dudes - better pony up your $30 to 'Bob' - 'cause you can preach all your dudist slack you want, but you're still Pink to Bob. THE STARK FIST OF REMOVAL is coming for you.
