He is a research fellow for Media Matters for America. He has recently stepped beyond "print-based" contributions, appearing on television news programs and videotapping his own interviews and posting them online. Recent contributions include: Young Republican Chickenhawks, Interview with Marine Mother Tina Richards and Rapture Ready: The Unauthorized Christians United for Israel Tour. His foray into home-made video posted to the web -- like that of other journalists and 'regular folk' -- demonstrates the ability for one to access a global medium at very low cost in order to get one's message across. via ericb

Well in fairness he's only able to do this because he has extensive print backing. Joe Nobody could never get DIY interviews with anyone of note except for the most extreme examples... even bloggers who have put in years of quality writing can't swing meaningful interviews like print journalists can. Obviously this will change in the future, but lets not go blowing smoke rings up asses what do not deserve it.

I think that tag is reserved.

As I said in the original thread, it would be nice if he chose rather less obvious targets. What next - the Klan are nuts?

Also, his dad is Sidney Blumthemal - that can't have hurt can it?

NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO DISCUSS THIS.

Dude, seriously. Why?

Erm. Why'd you have to go and post this?

i'ma videotap dat ass, you know what i'm sayin'?

Yeah, seriously duuuuuuude, why?

I wanna see more about Lindsey Lohan and "Saved By The Bell"'s "AC Slater" and other innocuous crap we can all agree on.

Not anything controversial that would lead to serious discussion that people might -- omigod omigod omigod -- disagree about.

And nothing that might appear on a nasty dirty political blog, not stories about future of our Republic. That's just, like, boring stuff grown-ups talk about! That stuff needs to be deleted by the mods (but only after they let rockhopper crap in it to justify the deletion).

More bread and circuses! More ephemera! Less thoughtfulness, fewer serious posts!

In all seriousness, good post, and thanks to adamvasco and ericb for a post that actually engages the mind. And Jeff_Larson, perhaps you'd be more amused by a visit to your local Chuck E. Cheese.

Are you waving the flag at me?

I hardly think this is a post about "the future of our republic"; this is an exercise asshattery with a post about a professional asshat. Post something worth discussing, something with meat, something dealing with ideas, and not LOLREDNECKS, and I'll come back from Chuck E. Cheese.

I don't mind this post and it's probably preferable to celebrity piffle. But those who dislike it also have a good point.

He's pretty annoying and his look-at-me style has more in common with Lindsey Lohan than he might care to admit. And indeed, Michael Moore, although at least Moore was doing it years ago.

But my main objection is that his undercover reports aren't telling us anything we didn't know already - college republicans are hypocrites and the Christian right are nuts - who'd have guessed it?

He needs to take a look at the first three letters of the word: "news".

This is a fantastic post. It has truly enriched my life.

Look at all the pertinent linkage!

This is the reason I always keep coming back to Metafilter. This is definitely the best 5 bucks I have ever spent.

Truly the best of the web.

Wow!

Ironically, we've reached the point where we can't even go to Metatalk about all the stupid idiots shitting in this thread because the post is a response to Metatalk. I think some sort of celebration is in order.

That was pretty decent of you Jeff.
There are a fair amount of us mefites who are neither usaians or live there. Some of us wonder why your batshitinsane communities are allowed to have a bearing on our lives. This is made slightly more complicated by the fact that your wimpy mainstream media ignores these wackjobs until they go and blow something up.
I mean fuck it some of your mainstream politicians and decision makers travel along with these arsehats, and others are going to be the new generation of political scumbags. But hey its friday and I'd rather be looking at some intellectually challenged bimbo grinding her silicone / botox altered body at me.

I understand that, and to an extent agree. But, ol' Maxie seems to be playing a game that only he can win. It's the Fox-News No-Spin zone approach to politics: let your craziest subset of opponent do the talking, and present it as if they all must be crazy. (Also, his argument in the CR post is completely nonsensical by any means.) It just smacks of immature irony, and a complete cowardice to approach the issues. There is a thing (or many) to be said for fair, honest debate.

college republicans? the breeding ground of future fundraisers and policy wonks?

ok, let's let them do the talking.

All this meta can go in the metatalk thread that already exists, you know. I don't think there's one on-topic post. There is also this video he did at the Liberal Take Back America conference.

I think you may be giving the CRs a bit too much credit don't you? Now, I'd probably agree with you if they were members of the Project for the New American Century. But, a couple of asthmatic, zit faced geeks who happen to have naive (to my ears) opinions is not enough for me to run to the hills while nervously checking if the sky is falling. And, it adds nothing of any semblance of knowledge about rep ideas. C'mon, now.
