A whole less than the two parts for me. James Brown without his soul? That's just some guy shouting about looking at cakes. I think I'll stick with Señor Coconut for my Kraftwerk soul in not a Kraftwerk form.

The James link (Give It Up or Turn It Loose): not bad for the first 45 seconds or so, it has a likeable minimalness, the singer does a reasonably good soul shout, sort of, and that little index-finger-plays-morse-code bit a nice touch. But boredom creeps in. Then when they take it to the bridge... well, they don't, that's the problem. They stumble and lurch into the bridge. The drummer rushes his fill, they muck up the groove, and they lose whatever pocket they had. And in that telling moment they lose credibility. If you can't nail that kind of shit, don't mess with it. Shoulda turned it loose before they even started.

I think I'll stick with Señor Coconut for my Kraftwerk soul in not a Kraftwerk form. Or alternatively, Lassigue Bendthaus/LB (another Uwe Schmidt pseudonym) did the whole digital-James Brown thing a while ago, and did it much, much better. The main problem with these guys is that they're boring as all hell... the kiss of death for anyone attempting to fool around with either James Brown or Kraftwerk.

That the lamest JB cover ever. Not just that; it's bad all over. It's unmusical and poorly executed. The worst sin is that the drummer sucks, utterly. At least if there's a solid groove, folks can have something to shake their asses to. Usually, the saving grace of the worst shit punk band is that at least the drummer rocks. This is not the case here.

The Flying Lizards' version of "Sex Machine" is done waaaay better. An amusing idea, though, but, yeah. (AWESOME! Found a link to the mp3. I've got this on CD, but, yes. That doesn't help you so much. But THIS does!)

This is pretty terrible, not only does it do JB no justice, it doesn't do Kraftwerk any justice either - the bit of Trans-Europ Express played at the start of the "Sex Machine" clip is way funkier than anything else here.
