Earlier this evening I had some of the tastiest duck I've ever eaten, served over perfectly cooked and delicious soba noodles, at a little restaurant about 2 minutes walk from my house, run by a fine and gregarious middle-aged lady (we say "oba-san" here in Japan). Why it took me so long to discover this restaurant I don't know, but now that I have I shall be dining there with some frequency. The duck was very tender. Really excellent. So I'm feeling real good about duck right now. I think I'll go look at your links. At least the ducks one.

At least people aren't offering up dog recipes.

< derail> Seriously, I have to confess something... while I'm normally very thick skinned about cultural delicacies? I have a serious problems with the fact that my puppy (her color, her body, etc.) looks so much like a Korean roasted dog. (If you are a dog lover whose never seen a roasted dog, DON'T click on it.) Ever since I first saw that photo, I have fought with the mental image of my sweet puppy being put on a spit. I'm totally scarred! < /derail>

Oh yeah, cute duck videos though.</></>

In Kansas City, there's a park with a well-known duck pond. The pond is also occupied by a number of fairly large, aggressive geese. I was walking there a week or so ago, and all of the ducks and geese were hanging out, taking handouts from small children.

Suddenly, two of the geese just start fighting. Now, I've seen the geese just kind of snip at each other before. Usually, one of 'em will back off fairly quickly, but these two just wouldn't stop. They were fighting pretty hard-core for about five minutes, with one snipping at the other, which had its beak buried in the first goose's breast. It was fairly terrifying.

The thing that was funny about it, though, was that when this started, every single duck in the pond (probably more than twenty, I've never counted) turned around and starting swimming towards the geese, as if to watch and chant "FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT." It was incredible.

This incident, combined with the adorable habit of baby ducks to follow Mama Duck around, has lead me to conclude that ducks are secretly people, and therefore are covered by the Man's Best Friend clause of the human-dog contract.

Ducks rule. Some of my blackest of depressions as a teenager were ameliorated by the fact that I had access to a duck pond. It's almost impossible to stay angry at the world when you have a dozen or so peepers (our term for ducklings who make the noise) are running around your feet, frantic for a bit of seed or bread.

For this reason, I can't ever even consider eating duck.

Geese are just loser-duck-wannabes, who hiss when they get mad. Which is actually kind of funny.

And on the subject of birds and dogs getting along, I just made this comment yesterday.

One saturday morning about 6-8 weeks ago I opened the curtains to see a mother duck waddle up our slipway with 10 itty-bitty little ducklings all following close behind, I called out for my SO to come and revel in the cuteness; sadly by the time she made it to the window, daddy duck had also appeared and was holding mummy duck by the throat while mounting her with some degree of roughness. Baby ducks continued to sit tight and watch.

Them ducks is sick. Though obviously this doesn't undermine dismas' 'ducks are people' theory.

Many years ago, I read the cutest (but ultimately saddest) article in Reader's Digest. The author had a pet dachshund, and then for some reason a Canadian goose started hanging around his house. The goose and the doxie became close friends, with the goose sleeping in the dog house with the pooch. The dox eventually got some sort of paralysis common to the breed, and required aqua therapy to get him to exercise his back legs and get them mobile once again. The guy bought a plastic child's swimming pool, and the goose swam circles around the dog, honking at him the entire time. Eventually the doxie started kicking his hind legs, and finally was good as new. The sad part was when the goose finally died, and the guy buried him....the dog kept digging him up.

The last time I spent any time duckwatching was a few weeks after the salmon run at the local river. All along the riverbank, ducks were head-deep in rotting salmon carcasses, fighting between themselves over the guts. Who's cute now?

And: Man's pant-leg humps dog - now that's news.
