I'll Need To See Your Hall Pass, Miss

It's easy and fun to hate Ohio! Here, let me show you how: Ohio House Bill 287. From Feministing: As written, the bill would ban women from seeking an abortion without written consent from the father of the fetus. In cases where the identity of the father is unknown, women would be required to submit a list of possible fathers. The physician would be forced to conduct a paternity test from the provided list and then seek paternal permission to abort. Claiming to not know the father's identity is not a viable excuse... What's next? Will Ohioans be required to publish their sexual pasts in the newspaper to get reproductive healthcare?

This post was deleted for the following reason: This might be notable if the wingnut bill ever gets anywhere near passing; for now it's just point-and-laugh/holler material. Kudos on the Ohio link roundup, though. -- cortex

This is Ohio. If you don't have a brewski in your hand you might as well be wearing a dress.

This will indeed decrease the number of abortions in Ohio significantly!

I'm sure Ohio will be held as a shining example by the anti-abortionists, not like those neighbouring states with the rapidly increasing numbers...

Well, spousal consent was already struck down by the Supreme Court a while ago (Planned Parenthood v. Casey). I don't see how this is very different.

Plus it's a bill, not a law. It only takes five reps to make a bill.

Y'know, at least then someone in Ohio might once in a while read a newspaper. Hey-O!

Meh, what's the big deal? It's not like anyone reads newspapers anymore.

(Besides, holding down the number of abotions might be the only thing that keeps Cleveland from becoming a ghost town by 2025...)

(3) No pregnant woman seeking to abort her pregnancy shall provide to the person who is to perform or induce the abortion the identity of a man as the father of the fetus if the man is not the father of the fetus.

(D) No man shall give a consent pursuant to division (B)(1) or (2) of this section as the father of the fetus if the man knows that he is not the father of the fetus.

So the man's only in trouble if he KNOWS he's not the father. The woman is a criminal even if she is legitimately mistaken.

I thought the republicans were swept from power last november in the Ohio statehouse. So, does this bill have any chance? I kinda doubt it.

The real question is: what does [MeFite] think abou this?

Only poor and middle-class women. The upper-class women will be given an allowance to purchase temporary three-day transit visas to exit the State for the healthcare they need.

If Ohio girls weren't so round in the end and high in the middle maybe they wouldn't need all these abortions.

I rescued my wife (then girlfriend) from a life of utter despair in Ohio 33 years ago. It is incredible that a state wherein there are so many urban centers with >300K population can be such a poster-child for backwoods hicks.

Yes, Cleveland Rocks, but Ohio sucks. I cannot be outraged by this bill--as someone said a bill is far from settled law--because this is just one of many idiocies that happen everyday in that benighted state.

I live 45 miles and 200 years from Ohio.

Pro-lifers want to punish women, give men an easy out, all this plus the weather with Whacky Weatherman Matt Haughey tonight at eleven!

HI KITTENS FOR BREAKFAST! Aren't you glad you fled... umm, "left" the state now?!

For the non-Ohioans in the crowd, yeah, it's only a bill now, but have you seen some of the other crazy shit our elected reps have actually passed?

And in the Insane, But Funny category, my hometown (Cleveland) is about to create a DMZ for strip clubs. I shit you not. They're zoning an entire area for nothing but adult funland, which presumably will allow the anti-lapdance crowd to focus all their picketing in one convenient place...

I just drove through Ohio on my way to Bloomington. Reminded me of why I would never ever live there. Hell hole of a state, full of ignorant people. The best part was the crowd in the cafe prattling on about the evils of "socialized medicine." Most had no teeth and were busy making themselves even more obese so the rest of us can pay for their health care.

Fuckwads.
