Well, things got a little contentious 'round MeFi Town concerning the US Poet Laureate, but surely we can set aside our differences, and all come together to celebrate the REAL American poetry: Tutti Frutti. Wooly Bully. Hanky Panky. Louie Louie. Mony Mony. And Shoo-Be-Doo-Be-Doo-Da-Day. Now, everybody can agree that that's poetry! And we're only scratching the surface!

Actually, that's not true, it was already international: that crazy Lone Ranger song linked to above is from the British band Quantum Jump, whom I confess I'd never heard of until now.

Who put the "bomp" in the "bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp?"posted by kirkaracha at 6:24 AM on August 3, 2007
Who put the "ram" in the "ram-a-lam-a-ding-dong"?
Who put the "bop" in the "bop-she-bop-she-bop"?
Who put the "dip" in the "dib-de-dip-de-dip"?
Who is that man, I'd like to shake his hand
He made my baby fall in love with me (yeah!)
When my baby heard "bomb-a-bo-bomp-a-bomp-a-bomp-bomp"
Every word went right into her heart
And when she heard them singing "ram-a-lama-lama-lama-lama-ding-dong"
She said we'd never have to part
These are great! But what about the actual poets? A few songwriters are responsible for a whole slew of do-wop, and in general many of those songs we associate with pony-tails and chantilly lace: A few of these poets: Barry Mann (who put the ram in the ram-a-lama-ding ding), Cynthia Weil (teamed with Mann),Gerry Goffin and Carole King (who together put the bomp
in the bomp bah bomp bah bomp)... and many more, all part of the infamous Brill Building writing team.

much of that stuff is either no longer appealing or viewed with nostalgia as music from our past. But for poets:

Postroad, I think you're in the wrong thread (or you're just a party pooper). This thread is about fun song lyrics that rhyme. The real Poet Laureate thread is here.

I see your Beefheart & raise you Blind Blake's Diddy Wah Diddy as interpreted by Leon Redbone--worth it for the bass saxophone solo.
Granted, I'm more acclimed to the Beefheart, but I couldn't find the sublime Ry Cooder version of Diddy Wah Diddy from Paradise and Lunch.
